Why are Lambda sensors fitted?
Everyone agrees that the amount of
pollution produced by motor vehicles
should be reduced. In order to encourage
this governments have progressively
introduced tougher and tougher exhaust
gas emission legislation.
The most popular method used by
vehicle manufacturers to reduce vehicle
emissions is the three-way catalyst. This
device converts the main pollutants in
the exhaust gas to less harmful gases.
However the three-way catalyst only
works efficiently if the air-fuel ratio can
be kept within very tight limits. This is
where the lambda sensor comes in.
The lambda sensor is typically situated
in the exhaust pipe just before the
three-way catalyst. The central element
of the lambda sensor is exposed to the
exhaust gas.
The lambda sensor continuously detects
the composition of the exhaust gas. As
the output from the sensor changes the
ECU instructs the fuel mixing system to
alter the mixture strength (see diagram I).
This is known as closed-loop control and
ensures that the mixture strength is
always correct and ensures optimum
catalyst efficiently. At the same time
driving performance is assured.

How does the Lambda sensor work?
There are two types of lambda sensors.
They use different ceramic elements to
detect the composition of the exhaust
gas.
Zirconia Sensors: The outside of the
Zirconia element is in contact with the
exhaust gas; the inside is in contact
with the air. Both sides of the element
are coated with a thin platinum layer.
Oxygen ions are able to pass through
the element and deposit a charge on
the platinum layer. These platinum
layers are the electrodes that carry the
sensors' signal from the sensor
element to the sensors' lead wire
(see diagram II).
The Zirconia element conducts oxygen
ions above a temperature of about
300°C. Because of the special properties
of the Zirconia element a voltage is
generated if the oxygen concentration
on the two sides of the element are
different. A low voltage is produced if
the air-fuel mixture is too lean and a
high voltage is produced if it is too rich.
There is a large change in voltage
around = 14.7:1 AFR (see diagram III).

and is why the sensors are referred to
as Lambda sensors. The ECU uses the
voltage produced by the Lambda sensor
to instruct the fuel mixing system to
strengthen or weaken the mixture.
Since the sensor only produces a
voltage when the element is above
approx. 300°C, it takes the exhaust gas
a little while to heat the element up to
this temperature after the engine has
been switched on. In order to reduce
the time it takes for the sensor to start
working most sensors today are fitted
with an internal ceramic heater. These
sensors have 3 or 4 lead wires. NTK's
ceramic heaters utilise our long
experience in thick film multi-layer
technology, ensuring top performance
and reliability.

Titania element
Titania Sensors : The Titania element in
these sensors does not produce a
voltage like the Zirconia element does.
Instead the electrical resistance of the
Titania element changes according to
the concentration of oxygen in the
exhaust gas. There is a big change in
the resistance of the element at
Lambda 1.0. Therefore when a voltage
is applied to the element the output
voltage changes depending on the
oxygen concentration in the exhaust
gas. This signal from the sensor is used
by the ECU for closed loop control. As
Titania sensors do not need air on one
side of the element they can be made
smaller and are completely submergible.
The sensor element, its platinum
electrodes and heater element are all
mounted on a ceramic substrate using
NTK's thick film multi-layer technology.
Titania and Zirconia sensor are not
interchangeable due to the difference
in size and the different control
strategies that are used to interpret
the sensor signal.
How to test Lamnda sensors
Failed or worn-out Lambda sensors
cause problems such as poor fuel eco-
nomy, failed emission test, failure of the
catalytic converter and poor driveability.
Before you can test the operation of
the Lambda sensor you will need an
oscilloscope. You should first check that
the basic engine setup is to the manu-
facturers' specification. Then thoroughly
warm up the engine-remember the
Lambda sensor will only function once
it is up to temperature.
Using the appropriate connecting devi-
ce, connect the sensor output to your
oscilloscope-do not disconnect the sen-
sor from the ECU. Run the engine at
approx. 2,000 r.p.m.
A properly functioning Lambda sensor
will show a rapidly fluctuating output
signal between approximately 0.2 and
0.8 volt. The time taken to change from
0.2 volt to 0.8 volt (lean to rich respon-
se time) should be about 300 milli-
seconds. The rich to lean response time
should be similar.
If the sensor output is constant or the
response time is too slow the sensor
should be changed.
It is a good idea to check Lambda sen-
sor function at every tune-up and befo-
re submitting cars for emission tests.
A slow sensor will effect fuel economy.
A new sensor will soon pay for itself by
cutting fuel bills.
