INTRODUCTION
It cannot be de nied that true, wise and enlightened Kabalists lived at
one time, and that some sti ll live . But such do not wander from place to
place, offe ring their art for sale, in order that they may accumulate we alth,
but they are satisfied to re main quietly in the pillared palace of Solomon,
where they are constantly employed in gathering divine wisdom, so that (as
they express it), they may finally be come worthy to re ce ive the hidden gifts
from above . I myself know such a man, who obta ined ex a lted wisdom from
the Kaba la, and who, notwithstanding his extreme pove rty, neve r unde rtakes
a kabalist ic proce ss for money. When I once asked him why he re fused to
write a de sired amulet for a noble lord, he offered him a large sum for his
se rvices, he answered me with an adage from the we ll-known Pirke Awoth
(Extract or Fragment from the Father):
"Deitschtammasch Be taggo Cha lof," that is to say, "whosoeve r accepts the
crown for his re ward, will pe rish suddenly. Not for all the money in the world
wou ld I do such a thing. But if I can assist my nee dy ne ighbor therewith, then
I will do what I can, trusting in the_o mnipote nce of the Most Holy, without
looking for a re ward. For my necessary support I do not fee l any concern, for
the Almighty has methods to support me if I trust in Him. Why, he even cares
for the sparrow."
It is Particularly re markable that the greate st and most ge nuine Kaba­
lists of the Jewish nation were ne arly all followe rs and disciplesof the blessed
Saviour of the world, and they are so sti ll, as I can prove satisfactorily, by
numerous passages from their writings and prayers. Le t this suffice for this
one kind of me n. But that Kabalists live and still live , whoengage in ex peri­
me n ts, and who pe rformed wonde rful works, and who will ye t do wonderful
things, isalsoan unde niable fact, unle ss we are pre pared to condemn all that
was ever said upon this subje ct by re nowned me n of wisdom.
The ce le brated and we ll-k nown Prussian Hussar, Lord of Archenwood
de clares, in a de scription of London, that there lives a man in that city, whose
name is Doctor Falcon, who is known to be a great Kaba list, and who is
visited and consulted by the most honorable and intelligent pe ople of Lon­
don. He states further, that this same Dr. Falcon, lived not very long since in
Brussels unde r the name of Jude Chaylim, Schmul Fulk, whoaccordingtothe
evidence of the French Duke of Nancy, in his published me mo irs of kabalis­
tic processes, pe rformed the most astonishing feats.
I confidently hope and trust, and I can assert without he sitation, that my
little book cannot have a te ndency to foster superstition. Take it for granted
that one of my re ade rs should choose to employ one of the methods
de scribed in the se pages in order to ad:om pl ish a de sired object, his eager­
ne ss to satisfy curiosity will soon disappearwhen he takes into consideration
the hard te rm s and strict morality which are re quired to ava il himself to them
in orde r to de rive any be ne fit or be successful in the ir use.
Be fore concluding my preface, it is necessary to give the re ader some
instruction concerning the arrangement of this volume. We find in it, for
instance, single words, names, se ntences, and indeed entire ex periments,
