The Global Reporting Initiative
The Global Reporting InitiativeTM (GRI) is a
multi-stakeholder non-proit organization that
develops and publishes guidelines for reporting on
economic, environmental, and social performance
(‘sustainability performance’). The GRI’s Sustainability
Reporting Guidelines had been used by over
1000 organizations worldwide, with many more
organizations considering them informally during
the preparation of their public reports. The guidelines
are developed through a unique multi-stakeholder
consultative process involving representatives from
reporting organizations and report information
users from around the world. First published in 2000
and then revised in 2002, the guidelines have now
entered their third generation, referred to as the GRI
G3 Guidelines which were released in October 2006.
Roberts Environmental Center
Emil Morhardt, Director of the Roberts Environmental
Center, and Roberts Professor of Environmental
Biology at Claremont McKenna College, directed the
REC’s participation in this study. Elgeritte Adidjaja,
Research Fellow at the REC, directed data collection
and designed and managed the database. Twenty-
three students, listed in the Appendix, participated
in data collection. One student, Selene Isaacson
did a large portion of the data collection and was
instrumental in collecting examples from company
texts. Sia Morhardt, Senior Consulting Fellow to the
REC, prepared the report with support from REC staf.
