Years ago I had a few guitar lessons with a really good teacher. He said that one of
the most important things that a guitar player could do is to
learn to visualize scale
degrees.
I've got to admit, when I heard that comment, I didn't really understand what
he meant.
And do you know what?
I didn't ask him to explain it to me.
And that was a stupid move
…because I had to
figure it out for myself. And that meant that learning about this stuff took me a LOT
longer than it should have! But I eventually did learn it. And I realized an important
thing…
Learning to visualize scale degrees is possibly THE most important thing you could
do to understand the fretboard better. It is every bit as important as learning the notes
on the fretboard. In fact…I would even say that it is MORE important.
Before we get started, I need to cover a few important points…
Important Point #1:
You May Not Be Ready Yet.
If you haven't yet developed a basic understanding of the fretboard then you aren't
ready yet. How do you develop this basic understanding? I recommend doing the
following…
!
Memorize the notes on the guitar fretboard. If you need help with this,
then you may consider investing in my
Guitar Note Mastery
e-book
.
!
Learn at least one major scale using The Guitar Scale Mastery System.
Important Point #2:
Your Goals May Not Need It.
If you don't want to gain a thorough knowledge of music theory, then you probably
don't need to work on the stuff in this e-book. This e-book is targeted at guitarists who

want to have an
excellent
understanding of music theory. (And more importantly, get
better at applying music theory to the guitar fretboard).
Important Point #3:
Be Patient.
There is a LOT in this e-book. It is a well-organized collection of many of the scale
degree visualization exercises that I have done over the years. Don't feel that you have
to learn it all at once. Just spend a 5-10 minutes each day working on this stuff.
There is enough here to keep someone busy for a long time. A very long time. A
seriously, very long time. (You get the point.
).
Important Point #4:
It Will Change How You Think About The Fretboard.
When I first started practicing scale degree visualization exercises it was a real eye-
opener. Those shapes and patterns started to make more-and-more sense. I started to
see the fretboard in a completely new way. And that helped my playing immensely.
The same thing will happen to you. After enough time has passed, the fretboard will
make much more sense. And this can only be a good thing!
Important Point #5:
Less Thinking, More Doing.
This is just my (somewhat obnoxious!) way of saying to take action and don't over-
analyze things. Rather than worrying about specifically how the exercises will help
you. Just
do
the exercises a little bit each day for a few months. Then you'll be able to
see
the benefits.

Important Points:
1.
Revision Material:
Sections 1 and 2 cover stuff that we have already looked
at in the Guitar Scale Mastery member area. Why? Because it's really
important, and you can't go over this stuff too many times. (With that said, if
you really can't stand doing it again, then you can start with Section Three.
).
2.
The Exercises:
Sections 3 and 4 cover some of the specific scale degree
visualization exercises that I have done over the years. It is important to note
that these supplement the exercises we covered as part of the Guitar Scale
Mastery System. So they are well worth doing.
3.
If You're Pressed For Time:
If you are REALLY busy, then my advice
would be to focus mainly on Section 4 that covers The Cross String Exercises.
