TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Customer complaint
– Squealing noise from engine compartment and/or
battery charge warning light on instrument panel lit.
Possible cause
– Alternator pulley loose or damaged.
– Alternator pulley detached.
Fault finding
– Confirm the customer complaint.
– Check whether the alternator pulley is damaged.
1 – Alternator pulley detached
2 – Alternator pulley damaged
– Check that there is no accessories belt debris in the
timing belt that could damage the engine.

Operation to be carried out
Depending on the result of the check:
– Replace the alternator pulley.
– Replace the alternator.
REPLACEMENT OF THE ALTERNATOR PULLEY
– Disconnect the battery (see MR for vehicle ).
– Remove the alternator (see MR for vehicle ).
– Check (4) the marking of the alternator pulley to be
replaced (see correspondence chart page 16A-6).
Note: the alternator pulley part number is stamped
on the alternator pulley flange.
Description of the operation
– Check the condition of the alternator casing:
If the alternator casing is not damaged at (3):
– Replace the alternator pulley, the accessories belt,
the accessories belt tensioning roller and the
tensioning roller mounting bolt(s).
Note: for pulleys with part number 77 00 110 616 ,
the marking on the pulley may be 10 616 .
4 – Alternator pulley marking
3 – No contact with alternator casing
– Replace the alternator pulley with a new one (see
Technical Note 3904A or 5008A ).
– Refit the alternator (see MR for vehicle ).
– Replace the accessories belt, the accessories belt
tensioning roller and the roller mounting bolt(s) in
accordance with the type of passenger compartment
heating.
– Reconnect the battery (see MR for vehicle ).
– Check the charging circuit.
– Perform a basic road test.

If the alternator casing is damaged due to contact
with the alternator pulley:
– Replace the alternator, the accessories belt, the
accessories belt tensioning roller and the roller
mounting bolt(s) (see MR for vehicle and
Technical Note 3904A or 5008A ).
