INSTRUCTIONS:
Prepare the mari and mark with a complex-10 division. Refer to the C10 instructions for
help with this division.
1. Mark the First Long Spindle
Determine the two points for the
first long spindle by placing a pin
1/3 the distance from a pentagon’s
center to one of its corners (Figure
1). Follow the guideline and
continue down the side shared by
the two adjacent pentagons located
below. Beyond these two pentagons
is another pentagon, all sharing a
common corner. Place a second pin
2/3 the distance from this corner to
the center of the pentagon as you
continue down the guideline. The
long spindle is worked around these
two pins.

2. Stitching the first Long Spindle
Refer to the Spindle Design instructions
for help with this stitch.
a) Round 1 — Using white thread,
work round 1 of the first spindle
(Figure 2). Click here for
instructions on stitching the spindle
design. Complete round 1 by
exiting the needle away from the
round. Do not cut the thread since
it will be used again in round 4.

b) Rounds 2 and 3 (Figure 3) —
Using black thread, work the 2 nd
and 3 rd rounds of the spindle.
Complete round 3 by exiting the
needle away from the round. Do
not cut the thread. It will be used
for the remaining spindles

c) Round 4 (Figure 4) — Using the
white thread from round 1, work
the 4 th round of the spindle.
Complete round 4 by exiting the
needle away from the round. Do
not cut the thread. It will be used
for the remaining spindle. This
completes the first long spindle.

3. Stitching the Remaining Long Spindles
a) Complete the next long spindle (Figure 5), measuring as was done for the first
spindle and using the same color sequence as before. Notice how the spindles
interlock. As you stitch the second spindle, interlock the spindles so they weave
over the first half of the adjacent spindle and under the second half of the
adjacent spindle. (Hint: Use the duller end of the needle to go under the
threads.) It’s important to be consistent with the weaving pattern throughout
the entire design – weave over the first half, weave under the second half
(Figure 6, close-up).

b) Continue stitching the long spindles as shown (Figure 7). In figure 8 (close-up),
three spindles are interlocked. Interlock the three spindles together by weaving
over the first half of one spindle and under the second half of that same spindle,
continuing by weaving over the first half of another spindle and under the second
half of that same spindle.

4. Mark the First Short Spindles
The short spindles are worked between
the centers of two adjacent pentagons
(Figure 9). Divide each pentagon into
fourths as shown. Determine the points
of the first short spindle by placing the
first pin ¼ the distance from the center
of one pentagon. Place a second pin ¼
the distance from the center of an
adjacent pentagon. These pins are
placed along a common guideline. The
short spindle is worked around these
two pins.

5. Stitching the First Short Spindle
a) Rounds 1 and 2 — Using black
thread. work rounds 1 and 2 of the
spindle design. The short spindles
intersect at the mid-section of the
long spindles (Figure 10 & 11). As
you stitch the short spindles, weave
over the first half of the long spindle
and under the second half of the
same long spindle. This will create
the same interlocking pattern as was
done with the long spindles.
Complete round 1 by exiting the
needle away from the round. Do not
cut the thread since it will be used
for the remaining short spindles.

b) Round 3 — Using white thread, work
the last round, continuing with the
weaving pattern (Figure 11).
Complete the spindle by exiting the
needle away from the round. Do not
cut the thread since it will be used for
the remaining short spindles.

6. Stitching the
Remaining Short
Spindles
Complete the remaining
short spindles (Figure
12), measuring as was
done for the first spindle.

7. Stitching the Starbursts
The starburst pattern is centered on each pentagon and stitched between the
guidelines (Shown in yellow for demonstrative purposes only, in Figure 13). Using
white thread, work long stitches, following the numerical sequence shown in Figure
14. Stitch a starburst inside each pentagon.
