Welcome
This edition is getting on for being two weeks late and the last edition was also a
good week late as well. It’s not hard for me to put my finger on the reason why.
My other commitments are taking time away from my work on Review.
This is my first love, without question, so this isn’t a build up to me explaining
that we’re going to stop. But if I am having difficulty meeting deadlines, then
something has to be done and with great reluctance, I’ve decided that for the
time being at least, UFO Review will become bimonthly. Translation; we’ll publish
every two months instead of every month.
This would normally be the cue to launch into a whole parade of promises about
how the extra time will permit us to produce wonderful editions brimming with all
sorts of fantastic stuff. And it will, in the sense that the extra time will allow us to
spend more time on the detail of each issue. So the next one after this will be at
the beginning of May and all being well, we’ll be prompt! Thank you for your
patience.
The Peter Jennings UFO documentary has come and gone and left a trail of
modestly happy to seriously frustrated people in its wake. Some were expecting
an awful lot from it and others, like myself, got exactly what we expected. Of
course, it couldn’t be all things to all people but the two questions I guess I would
ask afterwards are; has the subject of ufology been done any harm by the
programme and has the programme itself advanced the cause of ufology in any
sense?
Obviously this is an opinion only but I thought ufology came out of it well. One of
the things I tried to do was put myself in the place of an averagely intelligent
viewer with no particular emotional ties to the subject. What would he or she
have thought? After all, because there was “balance”, there were opposing
opinions and views on most of the topics discussed so you either switched your
brain off and thought, “Stuff it. I can’t make my mind up” or you came down on
one side or the other. My feeling is that many would have been swayed in “our“
direction. The witnesses featured were ordinary, articulate people who spoke with
conviction and yet without the passionate zealousness that can cause you to have
stirrings of unease. Restrained, controlled, quiet, understated assurance.
So, I certainly don’t think the subject of ufology has suffered from the Jennings
documentary at all, if anything the complete opposite, but has it advanced the
cause? By a small step; yes. It presented it in a serious light and treated it with
respect which was the least we could have asked for. There were certainly slights
and unnecessary remarks and it wasn’t the bulldozing ramrod that would bust
through the wall of media indifference and so elevate the subject to a new level
that some wanted.
But it could have been a lot, lot worse.

Greg operates at what I call the subterranean level of Ufology, as perfectly
defined by such publications as
Atlantis Rising
,
Viewzone
, and his own magazine,
The Excluded Middle.
It’s hard to define really but you might call it an
underground or alternative approach to the genre if you’re really keen on pigeon
holing him, with a strong semi political edge thrown in. His radio programmes on
Radio Mysterioso, a pirate station in L.A. are a hoot. The window in the studio is
open so the traffic noise outside can be heard, the phone rings and goes
unanswered, there are occasional periods of dead air and if you’re new to the
wonders of pirate radio, then you might wonder what the hell is going on.
As you’re about to find out, Greg is friendly with Bill Moore, the man who broke
the story of Roswell and the MJ12 papers, along with Stan Friedman. Bill was also
heavily involved in the Paul Bennewitz story and so when Greg decided to write
up Bennewitz’s legend, he naturally turned to his pal for help. The result was
Project Beta
, Greg’s first book.
The book has been received, shall we say cautiously amongst the UFO community
as it carries the “stigma” of Moore who endured the distrust of Ufologists after it
was revealed that he had worked with AFOSI in relation to Bennewitz. When
Moore stood up at a MUFON conference back in the 80s and revealed to the
delegates that a lot of what they believed in and about ufology was in fact the
result of air force intelligence disinformation, all of Moore’s earlier good work was
seen to go down the drain as far as they were concerned. The fact that the man
was doing them an immense favour was overlooked by the fact that their belief

systems and indeed some of their work had been shaken to its foundations.
Moore is unquestionably one of Ufology’s earliest heroes and yet it took years
before some would even mention his name again.
Hence the slightly reserved nature of the reception to this book; folk are worried
that there will be even more unpleasant revelations contained within that they
would rather not hear about. There aren’t.

SM: In our prior email correspondence, you commented about a slightly negative
review of the book that had appeared on Amazon.
GB: The guy gave it five stars but he said he didn’t know if any of it was true and
that the premise of the book was that everything about UFOs was made up by the
government. He either didn’t read the book or he read it with a preconception
that he kept.
SM: I’ll tell you something. When Nick (Redfern) launched the book publicly,
Nick’s emails everywhere were the first I think that most people knew about the
book……….
GB: Oh really? God, I have even more to thank him for than I thought I did. I
just saw a couple of the reviews he put up. They were really positive and I was
very happy about it.
SM: Oh he did, he reached out and really pushed very hard and got others to get
behind it too. Let’s put it this way, I don’t think the UFO community could not
have known the book was coming out. But the point I wanted to make was, to an
extent, Nick’s email gave that same impression. Maybe that guy read it and just
absorbed it and went into the book with that attitude. Nick had certainly
convinced me, before I’d started to read the book, that all of ufology was a myth
and it was a very pleasant surprise to open the book to realise that that’s not
what you’re saying.
GB: I’m saying that a great deal of the wackier elements of ufology, especially
the stuff that happened about underground bases,
exchange of technology and that aliens seeded the planet
with religious leaders, all that’s either been made up or
capitalised on by the Intelligence agencies. It’s hard to
get that across to someone who has no grounding
whatsoever in the field, and that’s the kind of people who
want to buy the book so it has to have some kind of
point, and you can’t have these grey areas where people
get disinterested or confused.

SM: But the difficulty with this stuff is, well for example,
a letter would have been sent to Bennewitz and within that letter, there would be
a large element of disinformation and made up crap and so on, but there would
also be elements of truth and the trick is to identify those elements that are true.
I can’t remember the name of the air force officer who wrote a particular letter to
Bennewitz, it’s the one where he goes on about the four rolls of film, but then he
goes on about Roswell. Now if you weren’t reading that within this book and
