attaching eyes to head).

GAUGE
With Super Saver and larger hook, 16 sc and 19
rounds = 4"/10cm
SPECIAL TECHNIQUES
Adjustable ring method Holding the yarn a few
inches from the end, wrap around your inger. Do
not remove wrap from inger, insert hook into the
wrap and draw up a loop of working yarn. Chain
one to secure the loop, and remove ring from
inger. Work stitches of irst round in the ring. Pull
gently, but irmly, on tail to tighten ring.
Surface Crochet (used for front of swimsuit
ties) Insert hook from outside of body to inside
(between stitches) and pull up loop from inside
body. *Keeping loop on hook, insert hook (to
inside of body) in next space to the left, yarn
over, and pull loop through to outside of body
and through loop on hook (1 surface crochet st
made). Repeat from * as directed in pattern.
Eyelashes
With smaller hook and F, ch 16, *sl st in 2nd
ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sk
next ch, sl st in next ch*; ch 4, repeat from * to
* once; ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in
next ch, sk next ch, sl st in last 7 chs. Fasten
off, leaving a long tail. Using tail and embroi-
dery needle, stitch eyelashes to bottom edge
(foundation chain) of each eyelid. Reverse one
eyelash piece before stitching to eyelid so eye-
lashes mirror each other (lashes point toward
outer corners of eyes).

Size F/5 (3.75mm) crochet hook
or any size to obtain correct gauge
Size 1 (2.75mm) steel crochet hook

HEAD AND BODY
Note Stuff head and body as you go. Stuff
head, neck, and upper body very irmly, but
stuff lower body (area just above ins) lightly so
it is rather lat (not puffy and round).
Round 1 Starting at top of head with larger
hook and A, make an adjustable ring, work 6 sc
in ring—6 sc. Do not join, but work in a spiral.
Insert stitch marker in irst st and move up to
irst st in each round as work progresses.
Round 2 Work 2 sc in each of next 6 sts—
12 sc.
Round 3 [Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 6
times—18 sc.
Round 4 Work [2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts]
6 times—24 sc.
Round 5 [Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in
next st] 6 times—30 sc.
Round 6 Work [2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts]
6 times—36 sc.
Round 7 [Sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in
next st] 6 times—42 sc.
NOTES
1 Mermaid’s head and body are crocheted in a
spiral, starting at the top of the head. Fins, Hair,
and features are made separately and stitched on.
Hair is started in the round, but changes to turned
row construction. Mesh overlay is made after body
is completed. Mesh starts at the waist, and is
crocheted around the body, ending at the in edge.
2 Use larger hook with Super Saver and smaller
hook with Aunt Lydia's thread throughout.
3 To change color, work last stitch of old color to
last yarn over, yarn over with new color and draw
through all loops on hook to complete stitch.
Proceed with new color. Fasten off old color.
4 Exact gauge is not essential for this project.
However, it is important that the stitches are
tight enough so the resulting fabric is sturdy and
keeps its shape when stuffed. This is especially
important for the Mermaid’s neck, because it
must be strong enough to hold up all that hair!

(to adjust for shifting of beginning of round).
Round 21 (Increasing for Shoulders)
Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 8
sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts—18 sc.
Round 22 Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in each of

Swimsuit Ties
Using larger hook and D, leaving a 30"/76cm
tail, make 6 surface crochet sts across chest
(from right to left) between Rounds 27 and 28,
starting at marked st (where marker was placed
and moved up 2 rounds). Cut yarn, leaving a
30"/76cm tail. Carefully remove hook from loop
(lengthening loop so it does not unravel). Insert
hook from outside to inside of chest, in next
space between sts to left of last surface crochet
stitch, yarn over and pull remaining tail through
to outside of chest. Place working loop of D

To make a smaller doll, use
size 3 thread and #1 steel
hook instead of Super Saver,
and size 10 thread with #7

edge of Mermaid body, arranging ins with Row 1
at left and right of body and Row 12 at center of
body, as shown in photograph.
Clam Shell (Make 2 for Swimsuit Top)
With larger hook and D, make an adjustable ring,
ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in ring—5 dc. Fasten
off, leaving a long tail. Use tails to stitch clam
shells onto chest just above surface crochet sts,
as shown in photograph.
HAIR
Note When working Round 2, Row 4, Row 7, and
Row 10 with curls, insert hook under only one
loop of chains, so curls twist.
With larger hook and C, make an adjustable ring.
Round 1 (right side) Ch 3 (does not count as a st
here and throughout), 12 dc in ring; join with sl st
in irst dc—12 dc.
Round 2 [Ch 13, working in BL of chs, sl st in
2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, 2 sc in next ch,
sc in next 2 chs, 2 sc in next ch, sc in next 6 chs,
sl st in next dc] 4 times, [ch 19, working in BL
of chs, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch,
*2 sc in next ch, sc in next 3 chs; repeat from
* 2 more times, sc in next 4 chs, sl st in FL of
next dc] 8 times—4 shorter curls (bangs) and 8
longer curls.
Note Work now progresses in rows.
Row 3 Ch 3, turn; working in unused loops on
Round 1, 2 dc in irst unused loop, 2 dc in each
of next 7 unused loops—16 dc. Leave remaining
sts unworked (for bangs).
Row 4 Turn; [ch 25, working in BL of chs, sl st in
2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, *2 sc in next ch,
sc in next 3 chs; repeat from * 4 more times, sc
in next 2 chs, sk next dc, sl st in FL of next dc] 8
times—8 curls.
Row 5 Ch 3, turn; working in unused loops on
Row 3, dc in irst 3 unused loops, 2 dc in next

Row 6 Ch 3, turn; dc in irst st and in each st
Arms and Hands
Follow same directions for each arm. Because
starting points are different (stitch markers are
in different locations), this makes a right arm
and a left arm. Stuff arms as you go.
Round 1 With right side facing, using larger
hook, join A with sl st in marked skipped st
on Round 24 of Body, ch 1, sc in same st as
joining, sc in 7 remaining skipped sts on Round
24, working sc around post of last st made on
Round 25 before skipping 8 sts and around
post of irst st made on Round 25 after skip-
ping 8 sts (this eliminates having a hole under
the armpit)—10 sc.
Rounds 2–13 Sc in each st around.
Round 14 Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st,
sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2
sts—12 sc.
Round 15 Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st,
sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2

stufing arms and lightly stuff hands. Using
yarn needle, thread tail through front loop of

Round 1 Hold mermaid upside down, with her
back facing you. Insert smaller hook under BL of
irst sl st made at waist (Round 33 of body), pull
up a loop of G, yarn over and pull through loop
on hook, working in sl sts on Round 33 of body,
[ch 11, sk next 3 sl sts, sl st in BL of next sl st] 8
times, ending with sl st in same st as joining—8
ch-11 loops.
Round 2 Sl st in irst 6 chs of irst ch-11 loop
(place marker in last sl st made), [ch 11, sl st in

FINISHING
Using long tails and embroidery needle, stitch
outer edge of eye whites to face. Using
long tails and embroidery needle, stitch eyelids/
eyelashes onto eye whites. Using embroidery
needle and H, embroider mouth as follows (refer-
ring to photograph): Make 2 small triangles (side
by side) with satin stitch for upper lip. Embroider
a rectangle just below these 2 triangles for lower
lip. Make 1–2 long horizontal stitches to deine/
divide upper lip from lower lip. Stitch hair onto
head securely around hairline using tails and yarn
needle with short curls (bangs) in front.
Weave in all ends.
