The Nokia "Hard Reset" ---------------------- When the Nokia battery completely drains, or when toggling the power on/off switch (under the volume down button on the Nokia) a "hard reset" is preformed. Traditionally, a hard reset, on a Windows CE/Mobile device, means that the device's ROM (meaning all files and registry settings) are reset to the last flashed ROM image. In the case of the Nokia 500 a "partial" hard reset is performed. The file system is reverted to factory defaults (for example, all files added to the \Windows folder will be gone), but the registry's "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" branch is kept at its last "saved" state. Simply changing the registry does not cause the HKLM branch to survive between hard resets, keeping the device on for many hours does not cause it to get saved. The only action that I've observed that saves the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" branch between hard resets is installing/reinstalling an application (I've used the GpsGate installation .CAB for this purpose). Because of this behavior I've had to change the way MioPocket via the "\MyFlashDisk\MioAutoRun\Scripts\init.mscr" and "\MioAutoRun.mscr" scripts detect if MioPocket is installed. After a Nokia partial hard reset, necessary files for the proper functioning of MioPocket are missing (such as dependencies that need to copied to the \Windows folder, and start menu shortcuts). However MioPocket can think it's still installed because it checks a HKLM key to see if it's properly installed, which could possibly still exist after a hard reset. My version checks for the existence of "\Windows\Programs\Navigation\Nokia Mobile Navigator.lnk", and if it doesn't exist initiates a MioPocket reinstallation. Using this known behavior, after you have your HKLM branch in a state you wish to save, you should install/reinstall an application to cause it to be "saved". GpsGate is a great commercial (free trial available) application, that among many other things (http://gpsgate.com/index.php?id=14), lets multiple applications share the GPS at the same time (via a virtual port). GpsGate can also fix GPS communication problems with certain applications (such as iGuidance), which can't communicate via the native device's GPS interface. This add-on for the Nokia 500 edition of MioPocket adds the following features: 1.) Re-installs GpsGate after a Nokia 500 "Hard Reset" 2.) Starts GpsGate when MioPocket starts 1.) Download GpsGate build 347 BETA (2.5 MB) for Windows CE .NET here: http://franson.com/gpsgate/download.asp (Click on link under the "GpsGate Client for Pocket PC") section. 2.) From the downloaded file, copy the CAB file to the SD Card. 3.) Close MioPocket if it's running. 4.) Using a file explorer on the Nokia device navigate to the SD Card and double tap the CAB file to install GpsGate into the (\SDMMC\GpsGate 2.0) folder. 5.) An icon for GpsGate should be in the system tray, if not start GpsGate via the Start Menu. 6.) Click the icon and choose "Settings", if a setup wizard shows up set it to manual. 7.) On the input tab, from the list choose "COM Port", set the input to COM Port 2, 9600 baud. 8.) On the output tab, from the list choose "Virtual COM Port", and choose COM 4. 9.) Close/OK Everything 10.) In your GPS applications, make sure that they're now configured to communicate via COM 4 at 9600 baud.
