Die Grammatik CD-ROM, Deutsch für Anfänger: Basisübungen
by Renate Luscher

1) The program must be installed using 'Install.exe'. The program will NOT run directly from the CD. The installation process takes only a few minutes and will not affect your computer system or any other programs that you have.

2) You can get a rapid overview of the features of the program before installing it by double clicking on 'Overview.chm'.

3) You can also view the detailed help file for the program before installing it by double clicking on 'dg1_200.chm' in the directory LNG on the CD.

4) System requirements

Your computer must
- be running a 32bit Windows (e.g. Windows 95/98/NT4/2000),
- be set up for a screen size of at least 640x480 pixels,
- be set up for a colour depth of 16bit (32768 colours) or greater.

5) Installation Guide

During installation, you will be asked to select one of four levels of installation.

You can change these configuration options at any time by running the installer once more and choosing the ‘Change configuration’ option.

- Full size / fast / approx. 60 MB on the hard disk
This option puts all of the frequently used files for the program onto the hard drive.

- Large size / quite fast / approx. 30 MB on the hard disk
This option puts most of the frequently used files for the program onto the hard drive.

- Medium size / medium speed / approx. 10 MB on the hard disk
In order to save on disk space, this option leaves some large files on the CD-ROM. Access to most parts of the program requires CD-ROM access.

- Minimum size / economy / approx. 6 MB on the hard disk
This option takes up the least space on the hard drive but requires the most intensive use of the slower CD-ROM drive.

6) Performance issues

Your program will perform better if:

- It is not competing with other programs for (possibly) scarce resources. Make sure that other significant programs (including for example email programs) are not also running in the background when you are using this program.

- You have selected the fastest configuration option that is suitable for your system.

- Your hard disk is not seriously fragmented (use a defragmentation tool such as that supplied with Windows).

7) General remarks on CD-ROM drives and hard drives

- A hard drive is much faster than a CD-ROM drive at accessing data and at transferring the data to the computer processor. Space on the hard drive is often in short supply.

- The CD-ROM is not only slower in transferring data than a hard drive, many CD-ROM drives 'go to sleep' if they have not been used for a few seconds. The time you take working in an exercise may allow the CD-ROM drive to 'go to sleep', resulting in an especially slow reaction when you want to access data on the CD-ROM.

- Regular defragmentation of the hard drive maintains its efficiency.
