Hi, and welcome back. For some reason, I've been infatuated with icons lately. You may
have seen the tutorial I created in the last NAPP Newsletter on emoticons. I received
such great response from it that I thought I'd take it a step further. If you're a windows
user, you may have seen the little windows people scattered throughout the system
folders in XP. If you're not a windows user then you most likely have seen them
somewhere anyway. Here's a quick way to create them.
Step 1: Create a new 500 x 500 pixel Photoshop canvas. Fill the background with a nice
blue color. I used R:111 G:146 B:250.
Step 2: Create a new layer named BODY. Select the Elliptical Marquee Tool and draw an
oval. Then hold down the Alt/Option key to subtract from your selection and draw
another oval at the top of the body for the head. Set the foreground color to a light gray
(R:171 G:171 B:171 ) and dark gray (R:108 G:108 B:108) as your background color.
Then select the radial gradient tool and drag a gradient from the top down.

Step 3: Now add the following Drop Shadow and Inner Glow layer styles to this object.

Step 4: Create a new layer named HEAD. Draw another oval shape with the Marquee
Tool. This time, set R:252 G:173 B:62 as your foregrounnd color and R:214 G:138 B:42
as the background color. Drag a linear gradient from the top down over this selection.
Step 5: Add the following Drop Shadow and Inner Glow layer styles to the HEAD layer.

Step 6: Great. Now we have some selections work to do for the head. First, create a
new layer named HAIR. Then draw a large oval selection that encompasses an area of
the head. Don't worry about the area that extends beyond the head shape.
Step 7: Now Ctrl/Cmd + Alt/Option + Shift + Click on the HEAD layer. This intersects
your HEAD layer selection with the active selection you created in step 6.

Step 8: Fill this selection with R:171 G:16 B:15. Then, apply the following layer styles to
the HAIR layer.
Step 9: Next, use the polygonal lasso Tool and select some small jagged shapes toward
the front of the hair.
