Fossil or Statue?

This has been an interesting week. Colin and I were invited to teach at the Rocky
Mountain School of Photography located here in Western Montana
(
http://www.rmsp.com
). The experience was great and I look forward to doing it again
in the future as time allows.
As it is a professional school I was a bit worried about the second day. I went there with
the intent of showing these people ways to use Photoshop that perhaps they hadn’t
considered. On one occasion I simply said I was going to be using the Liquify tool, and
they became very excited… I guess even professional minded people enjoy a bit of ‘cool’
or ‘just for fun’ stuff once in awhile.
This week let’s do something interesting by converting a man into some sort of decaying
stone statue.
First, open an image showing a lot of skin. As my wife may be lurking around
somewhere, I’ll use a male image this time.
Next open a stone image. Find one that is as large or larger than the photo of the
person.
With the texture you want active, copy the stone image by selecting it
(Command/Control+A), copying it (Command/Control+C) and then pasting it into its own
layer in the man image. (Command/Control+V)
Rename the new layer Stone Texture or something similar. Set the Blending mode for
the Stone Texture layer to Soft Light.
Duplicate the Stone Texture layer and change the Blending Mode to Multiply.
My original man layer has him on a black background. Using the magic wand tool, select
all the black on the background surrounding the man.
Delete the excess from both stone texture layers.
Create a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer between the 2 texture layers. Adjust the
settings as seen in the example below and click OK.
Here’s the stone man thus far:
Create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer at the top of the layer stack with the following
settings. Click OK.
The Layers Palette should look like this:
Progress check:
You can continue tweaking until you are satisfied with the tone of the stone, contrast
and so forth. I’m adding 2 more adjustment layers: Hue/Saturation and
Brightness/Contrast:
