Overcoming objections
Objection: I don’t see VMware actively promoting HP StorageWorks the way
they promote other vendors. Why should I deploy VMware on HP
StorageWorks?
Response: VMware is vendor neutral, which was punctuated by its separation
from EMC in 2007. While many companies can provide hardware that works
with VMware, no other company offers the unique set of tightly integrated
virtualization management capabilities offered by HP. HP rigorously tests and
certifies its products with VMware including hardware, drivers, management
agents, software and more. HP is the number one seller of VMware, and has
more certified VMware engineers than any other vendor.
Objection: I am worried about business continuity and availability when
moving away from a reliance on physical servers only.
Response: HP StorageWorks Storage Mirroring for virtual machines enables
replication of application data from physical to virtual machines or from
multiple physical or virtual servers to a single disaster recovery target and
failover to the disaster recovery target in the event of an outage. This failover
process is achieved quickly and allows the application to continue to serve the
user community during an outage.
Customer pain points
Pain: Storage needs are growing exponentially, but IT budgets are not.
Solution: The HP and VMware solution provides high-performance, reasonably
priced shared storage/SAN solutions that allow the user to start with a very
small configuration. Priced right for smaller businesses, HP StorageWorks AiO
and MSA arrays come ready-to-go as integrated hardware, software and
support services that only HP can deliver.
Pain: Small and medium businesses also need business disaster tools.
Solution: The HP solutions provide the necessary tools to survive business
disasters. VMware software integrates with the business continuity features of
the HP BladeSystem and HP StorageWorks storage. For example, use HP
StorageWorks MSA to create high availability VMware configurations at one
site and then use HP Storage Mirroring to replicate those VMs to another site.
Pain: Complexity in the IT environment makes it too expensive to manage and
maintain.
Solution: The HP and VMware virtualization solutions consolidate resources to
simplify the IT environment and reduce the costs associated with hardware,
operations and maintenance. HP StorageWorks arrays lower your total cost of
ownership (TCO) by enabling consolidation and centralization of storage and
storage management.

Bill of materials for the HP storage and
VMware sample configurations
With pre-tested and pre-tuned configurations, you can help accelerate the sales
cycle—and your customer’s win rate. Use the below bills of materials to speak
with your customer’s IT staff about what components they need to build out a
solution. To complete the proof-of-concept (POC) testing, we used a tool that
you can leverage as well—the HP ProLiant sizer for VMware.
The application used for the testing and validation of the configuration was
Intel’s tool called IOMeter. The testing consisted of testing the different server
with the array with RAID 5 and RAID 10 comparisons. The final testing
consisted 10 virtual machines from two VMware ESX host servers accessing the
array at the same time. Intel IOmeter was set to test 100 percent maximum
throughput for the disk array selected.

Within this sizer, we were able to do a POC for the HP storage with HP servers
and VMware software you see in the following configurations. Your customer
may not know what server to use. Luckily, the HP ProLiant sizer for VMware
allows users to determine the type of HP ProLiant server needed and the size of
array and, in certain cases, the type of array to use according to the physical
system requirements. The sizer takes the guess work out of creating the right
configuration by providing a bill of materials (BOM). This BOM provides you with
a list of the components needed to build your tested solution. This sizing exercise
also provides the ease of mind your customer needs by testing the reliability of
the overall solution. In the sample used for the following configurations, the sizer
generated 6–10 sample servers for the POC. These were tested against our
consolidation and disaster recovery solutions for small to medium businesses.

The servers used in the proof-of-concept were the highly reliable HP ProLiant
DL380 and BL480c Server Blades, paired with the modular HP BladeSystem
c3000 single enclosures. Building on that platform we also tested the HP
StorageWorks MSA2012fc array, MSA2012i array, AiO1200 array and AiO
SB600c Server Blade.

And what if a disaster were to strike? In many cases, regional sites with small
infrastructure solutions also need disaster recovery plans. Their small
infrastructure of servers and some virtual machines may be vulnerable. We
tested for that as well using HP StorageWorks Storage Mirroring Software and
Storage Mirroring for Virtual Infrastructure. This software can offer host-based
replication and failover for your customers. For the disaster recovery testing on
the POC we used simple but useful configurations to reflect a regional site with
a mail, database, application physical servers and web, file and print servers
in virtual machines to test both HP StorageWorks Storage Mirroring products.

If your customer is worried about whether all these parts are going to work
together, you can reassure your customer by letting them know all the hardware
used in the proof-of-concept was verified and listed as being certified in the
VMware Hardware Compatibility List. Though the following step-by-step tests
describe the use of the HP StorageWorks MSA array, these tests were also
completed using the HP StorageWorks All-in-One Storage System and Storage
Blade.

Here’s a step-by-step look at how the testing was completed. The proof-of-
concept hardware used was the HP ProLiant DL380 Server and the ProLiant
BL480c Server Blade. Both servers were using a Qlogic dual port host bus
adapter for the fibre SAN testing. In addition, the HP BladeSystem c-Class
blade enclosure used a pair of HP Virtual Connect Ethernet and fibre modules
for the iSCSI and FC testing. The network configuration for both HP ProLiant
servers consisted of 4 network ports and used a separate vLAN for the iSCSI
testing.

The HP StorageWorks arrays used in the testing were the HP StorageWorks
AiO SB600c, AiO1200r, MSA202i and MSA2012fc. The HP StorageWorks
AiO SB600c Storage Blade was tested with 6 drives to demonstrate a basic
offering for a low cost iSCSI solution with the HP ProLiant c-Class blade servers.
The HP StorageWorks AiO1200r was tested with both the HP ProLiant DL380
Server and the HP ProLiant BL480c Server Blade using all SAS drives. The HP
StorageWorks MSA2012i and MSA2012fc were tested by using the same array
exchanging only the controllers. The HP StorageWorks MSA2012 for both
protocols used 146 GB SAS disk drives.
