The need to copy increasing amounts of customer data
to removable storage media creates a huge physical
asset management problem. In many cases, companies
have to deal with hundreds, or even thousands, of tape
and other removable storage media movements on a
daily basis. Without effective management tools to track
media and direct media handling operations, organi-
zations run the risk of losing valuable backup tapes, thus
putting their ability to recover data at risk.
Designed in partnership with data-center staff, Data
Protector Media Operations maximizes the effectiveness
of media procedures by creating daily task lists, organizing
tapes for logical data center walkthroughs, and enabling
operator control of tape libraries, barcode scanners and
media label printers.
Data Protector Media Operations is fully integrated with
all of the key elements of the backup/recovery and media
management environment to facilitate automated data
exchange between applications, equipment and
service providers. This includes data collection from
backup applications, fast data entry via barcode scanners
and electronic information exchange with offsite service
providers and replacement media vendors. By monitoring
media operations at the service level, and by reporting
any exceptions to pre-defined Service Level Objectives,
Data Protector Media Operations allows operations staff
to focus on meeting the needs of the business, while
media operations takes care of the operational details.
HP OpenView Storage Media Operations is a life cycle
media management solution providing tracking and
management of offline storage media—such as
magnetic tapes—resulting in more reliable backups,
faster data recovery, improved staff efficiency and
reduced costs. Unlike “home-grown” tools, Data
Protector Media Operations offers a professional
solution for IT operations that manage thousands of
removable media. It tracks all media, whether online,

Regional or multi-site tape sharing

when organizations need to transfer or share tapes
among locations, sometimes for moving large data
sets or for disaster-recovery purposes. Data Protector
Media Operations automates this transfer process,
automatically transmitting the tracking data and
providing the return instructions to accompany the

weekly backups has traditionally been a challenging

vaulting, the manual method of tracking which tapes
need to be mounted where and when can quickly
become overwhelming. Data Protector Media Operations
solves this problem with automated pre-mount configur-

Error checking and duplicate tape warnings
Data Protector Media Operations automatically performs
device error checking to ensure no conflicts exist that
might interfere with scheduled backups. This feature helps
to identify and correct cases where improper device
specifications caused backup failures. Data Protector
Media Operations also identifies instances of duplicate
tape labels or numbers. This feature reduces instances of
backup failure, improves backup reliability and eliminates
instances of duplicate tapes.
Accelerated tape logging and vaulting
Data Protector Media Operations enables administrators
to subdivide and delegate the check-in and storage
process without diminishing control and security. Vault
administrators can process 1,200 tapes in one to two
hours. User name and password security enables
multiple users to log in and help check in and store
tapes. Data Protector Media Operations streamlines
workflow, saves time, improves the division of labor
and helps ensure secure tape handling.
