CAMERA SHOT COMPOSITION
In this video, I’ll teach you how to use your camera like a REAL video boss!
You will learn about framing your shots to get the most impact out of your
subject and what to do in specific situations.
CAMERA SHOT COMPOSITION
Wide-shot of room: Use of Background light, Nice key light for subject,
room has light bouncing off one side, Edge light in the back corner.
Subject is fully lit.

ESTABLISHING SHOT
: Create a wide-shot of the room
Used this to get a shot of the shooting environment
•
WIDE SHOT
is good for showing the talent in its environment
Great for full action scenes (2 persons in action)
Great for Exercise videos
Great for Painting walls (or anything needing wide area)
•
MEDIUM SHOT
(is from the hips up)
Great for showing medium amount of action/movement
Has room to interact with the room and or the object
Great for interacting with objects (swords)
Still Get a sense of what the subject is doing
When holding objects, keep object above the waist

MEDIUM-CLOSEUP SHOT
(is from the chest up)
Great for showing medium amount of action
See the emotions on subjects

HEAD-SHOULDERS SHOT
No chest (just the head and shoulders)
Great for Talking head interview

CLOSE-UP SHOT
Just the Face
great for showing emotions
•
EXTREME-CLOSEUP SHOT
(Zoom in )
Use to emphasize an object
Use to emphasize facial features
Lips and Eyes

INSERT SHOT
(Zoom in further
Great for zooms on an innate object
Showing some important object relative to the story
Use inserts to punctuate topic being discussed
Use inserts to help complete the story (family crest)

TWO SHOT
(MEDIUM shot or WIDE shot)
Two person in a shot
Great for interview settings
SHOOTING SUGGESTIONS FOR CAMERA COMPOSITION

You want to be one composition (one-shot length) away when editing
(so skip the next one in the tier). You want to skip one when
editing. (Never want to go from one to the next one in the tier)

WHY COMPOSITIONS WERE INVENTED
•
So persons could call out to camera operators different variations
Give me a Two Shot, Or Medium Shot, or Close-
•
Editors like different shot variations to allows cutting BAD bits
•
Editors like how easy it is to:
1.
To cut from a wide shot to a medium close-up,
2.
To cut from medium shot to a close-up or an extreme close-up
because it allows us to cut out the areas in between where we
want to pick up the pace and the action
3.
When doing interviews and in a medium shot and you screw up a
line, the camera operator could zoom into a close up
•
By cutting in and out, you can accelerate the editing
WHY NEED TWO TAKES
•
Get safety TAKE from a DIFFERENT angle
•
Always try to get TWO angles and make sure they are one-composition
away from each other
1.
Cut from #1 Wide shot (SKIP #2) and go to #3)Medium close-up
2.
Cut from #2 Medium shot (SKIP #3)& go to #4 Head/Shoulders
3.
Cut from #3 Medium Close-up (SKIP #4) and go to #5 Close-up
4.
Etc.
•
EX: Take 1: one shot as wide shot
•
EX: Take 2: one shot as medium close-up
