Parchment Craft – Beginner’s Class (Pattern 4)

Pattern & instructions by Robyn Cockburn May 2008

You will need:

v      Parchment paper (standard 140gsm).

v      Small and medium ball embosser

v      Hockey stick or shader

v      Fine stylus / scriber * optional

v      Embossing mat

v      White pencil

v      Paper knife or scissors

v      Colouring medium (crayons or felt pens or pencils or water colour pencils)

v      Cardstock to mount parchment for completed card

v      15cm of double-sided tape

v      Standard craft mat for cutting

v      Sticky tape

Method:

1.     Tape a piece of parchment over the pattern, allowing an extra 1cm at the top to fold over the finished card.

2.     Using a sharp white pencil trace all outlines of the design. Remove the pattern.

3.     Turn the traced parchment face down onto your embossing mat.

4.     Rub wax paper over the reverse of the pattern.

5.     Using a small ball embosser, emboss all of the outlines of the butterfly.

6.     Using a fine stylus (or small ball embosser) emboss the outlines of the flowers, leaves, scallops and the swirls in the butterfly wings.

7.     Using the small and medium ball embossers emboss all leaves, and the border scallops (refer finished card).

8.     With the hockey stick or shader tool, emboss the tips of the flower petals.

    1. Shading should be done lightly and one area should be gone over several times to achieve the desired whiteness.
    2. Do not press too hard when shading or the larger white areas will go “lumpy”.
    3. For graduated petal edges, place the tip of the shader at the outside edge of the petal and stroke towards yourself in a flicking motion.
    4. Do not run the hockey stick / shader over the edge/outline of the shaded areas – when the main part is shaded swap to the medium or small ball embossers and “fill in” the edges to meet the traced outlines.

9.     Lightly emboss a fold line along the left of your pattern. Emboss on the back of the parchment. Don’t press too hard or the parchment may crack along the fold line.

10. Colour the flowers, leaves and butterfly on the back of the parchment with your chosen colouring medium.

11. Using a paper knife (or scissors) cut around the border of the pattern

12. Fold the parchment along the fold line and gently run any smooth tool handle (eg scissors) along the line to flatten it. Trim so that only about 1cm of parchment remains for the back of the card. (Slightly wider than the width of the double-sided tape).

13. Place double-sided tape along the back of the spine of the folded card stock. Attach the completed parchment to the card.
