BoostX™ FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions:
What is BoostX™?
BoostX™ is a VST plugin implementation of an upward compressor. It will boost your low levels,
as in a vocal track, while keeping your high levels under control. However, it does not work in the
manor of conventional compressors and limiters. Instead, it applies a technique I developed which
uses the Non-Linear Sample Remapping Technology developed for LimitX™.
What systems are BoostX™ compatible with?
BoostX™ is a VST plugin conforming to version 2.4 of the VST specification. It should work on
any Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 based VST host.
Will BoostX™ work in Pro Tools?
Yes! BoostX™ works great in Pro Tools by using the fxpansion VST-to-RTAS wrapper (available
at www.fxpansion.com). That's how I use it myself!
Why do the meters not move much of the time?
The BoostX™ meters are NOT VU meters! At any given instant, they show the increase in level
applied to the low level part of your signal. So, as your signal gets louder, the amount of level
increase is reduced, and the meters will actually go down. On very loud parts, the meters will show
nothing at all!
What sample rates does BoostX™ work with?
Any! Each sample is simply processed as it passes through. The nature of the Non-Linear Sample
Remapping technology is independent of sample rate.
How do I use BoostX™?
Most often you will use BoostX™ on individual tracks (CPU load is very low). BoostX™ is
intended to be used to bring up the levels of vocals and solo instruments so that they "sit" properly
in the mix. You adjust the boost level slider for 0db to 9.5db of boost to the softer parts of your
signal, which brings them up, and "forward" in the mix.
What's so special about BoostX™'s Non-Linear Sample Remapping technology?
Traditional compressors and limiters all suffer from artifacts, such as "pumping" and "breathing",
due to attack and release timing issues, and the tendency to "flatten" the digital waveform. This not
only sounds bad, and introduces distortion, but every time your waveform is flattened you lose high
frequency detail and your recording sounds dull.
BoostX™ instead processes the entire digital stream, leaving unchanged those samples that are not
going to be a part of a waveform that will exceed 0db, and modifying all samples that are part of
the peak to move the whole peak back below 0db intact. This is accomplished with zero latency
and without loss of high frequency detail resulting in a very transparent process. Other plugins
claim to be transparent, BoostX™ actually is transparent.
What are BoostX™'s limitations?
BoostX™ adds up to 9.5db of level increase to the low level parts of your signal. There is no
"threshold" per se', but there is effectively one at roughly -15db. It also applies the Non-Linear
Sample Remapping technology mentioned above, which allows you to catch those occasional
digital "overs" that would otherwise ruin a good mix.
There are limits to what any plugin can do. BoostX™ cannot work miracles. If you crank all your
levels up to the point that you are constantly causing "overs", then there is nothing BoostX™, or
any other plugin, can do about that.
Will BoostX™ help me win the "loudness" wars?
No. BoostX™ can effectively bring your low level signals up 9.5db, which can result in your mix
sounding louder. But the purpose of it is to bring up those low levels so that vocal parts and such
will be heard within the mix, not to make the whole mix louder .
And, it is a moot point anyway, since loudness is perceived by your brain as the difference
between the loud parts and the soft parts of your music. So, if you have no soft parts, it will not
sound loud. It will sound strained, and fatiguing to listen to. It will simply be what they now call
""pre-distorted".
Will BoostX™ be released for the Mac?
There are no plans for a Mac version
