W elcome to Random Deities! Let's
move right along shall we? After all,
it's rather insulting to keep our
deities-to-be waiting. And what if they get anxious
and curse you? Well, it won't do much now, since
they don't have any powers yet, but it might be
nasty later on. And believe-you-me, you don't
want to face the wrath of even a tiny god.
Random Deity Names
Every deity needs a name! Well, aside from
that weird "unnamed deity" who keeps showing
up, but there never seems to be more than one per
campaign world. Either way, we present the
Random Deity Name Table. Every name on here
is 100% certifiably guaranteed to sound halfway
authentic!
But we kid. Simply roll a d20 and a d10 and
find your new deity's name. Then, if you don't
already have domains picked out, proceed onto
Part 2. It's so simple, even those weird hangers-on
called "players" who keep wrecking your perfectly
crafted plots could do it. Damn them all. In fact,
we suggest damning them frequently. They
usually get out eventually, and GM's need a way
to relieve stress, too.

Random Portfolios and Domains
F or this, grab some % dice or take your
pick. Obviously, a lot of deities may
have very unusual or specific variants. A
god of Rainmaking might have influence only
over one nation's fields or a god of Strategy might
simply favor chess-players much more than actual
strategists. In fact, most gods favor characters of
specific classes or prestige classes, or have strong
regional ties. Most portfolios have domains
common to them, although not all gods go along
with that. You could put the portfolio of Death in
the sole possession of a Lawful Good deity, who
employs undead creatures to protect the bodies of
the dead from greedy adventurer scum. Hey, I like
that idea! Just think how annoyed the players will
be when they find that plundering tombs and
corpses is an evil act…
Getting back on track, you'll probably need to
roll several times to fill out four domains per
deity. Secondly, don't worry too much if the
results seem to come up widely divergent. Many
classical gods had several different roles at
different times. Or a god could well have domains
quite opposed, from the mortal perspective. A
human might find a god of "life and death"
seemingly conflicted. The deity herself might
simply be the one who measures out the lives of
the newly born, however, so both aspects fit her
quite well.
Obviously, even we in our infinite majesty
can't get everything down, so feel free to let your
imagination run wild and pick out something not
on our lists. But not too wild. You remember what
happened last time. No, wait, you don't remember,
‘cause you were so trashed. Which reminds me,
you'd better buy ten copies of this or we'll send off
those pictures.

These portfolios usually indicate the Plant
domain, but the Sun domain also suits them.

For obvious reasons, these portfolios almost
always involve the Animal domain. The Strength
domain fits as well – deities of creatures tend to
be a simple but strong lot.

Fighting
Most of these portfolios come with
the War and Strength domains. While
Destruction also fits, a few of these
portfolios have it marked as being
specifically appropriate. Fighters usually
worship these gods, but don't have any
specific deities. People often consider
war to have both Lawful and Chaotic
variants, and most consider it morally
neutral - or at least justified whenever
it’s their war.

Criminal
Whether criminal deities or deities of criminals
(in a fantasy world the distinction may be small)
favor the Chaos or Evil domains. These are
marked depending on which one the portfolio
favors. A god of theft might be Chaotic Good as
often as Chaotic Evil. A god of serial
killers, on the other, probably isn't a
happy-go-lucky soul who simply enjoys
teasing the more responsible gods. Rogues
often worship these gods, but don't usually
have a specific one of heir own. Similarly,
virtually never does a plain "god of crime"
exist.
