BLOODLINE LEVELS
Every so often, an individual is born who stands out
a little from the rest of his people. This individual
displays characteristics associated with a different
kind of creature, such as a dragon, giant, celestial, or
demon. Such a character is said to have a bloodline.
at 1st level must be carried through, unless you wish
to take a stiff XP penalty.
We can adapt the mechanics presented in
Background Levels to resolve these issues. Essentially
each bloodline becomes a class in which characters
can take levels to reflect the strength of their
bloodline. No decisions need to be finalized at 1st
level, and as full classes, each bloodline has its own
attack bonus, save bonuses, hit die, skill points and
class abilities. You don't need to give up these basic
parts of character advancement in order to have a
bloodline.
Bloodlines can exist for any of a number of reasons.
Perhaps the character has an unusual ancestor, such
as a dragon who took alternate form to live among
humans or elves. The character might be a
throwback to an earlier age, when all species were
more closely related. The bloodline might be the
result of unusual supernatural energies present
during conception, pregnancy, or birth. It could also
be an omen sent by the gods, part of an ancient
prophecy or dire legend.
NEW BLOODLINE MECHANICS
To establish a character's bloodline, you select a
Bloodline feat. This reflects the character's bloodline
and provides in-game effects, such as a bonus to a
particular skill and affinity with creatures of the
bloodline type. You don't have to select a Bloodline
feat if you don't want to. Most characters do not
have an atypical bloodline, and therefore have no
use for the Bloodline feat.
EXISTING BLOODLINE MECHANICS
The bloodline mechanics are a clever application of
the d20 System TM . They effectively add a Level
Adjustment to a character with a bloodline, +1 LA at
a time. A 20th-level character with a major bloodline
actually has 17 class levels and a +3 LA. In some
sense, game balance is preserved in this way.
If so desired, when a character with a Bloodline feat
advances a level, he may advance a level in his
bloodline class rather than a base class, prestige
class, racial paragon class or background class. This
advancement grants further benefits associated with
the bloodline, along with the things normally
associated with advancing a level such as skill
points, hit points, save bonuses and base attack
bonus progression. Advancing in a bloodline class
reflects a character focusing on and developing his
bloodline potential. Bloodline levels are not
considered when determining XP penalties for
multiclassing.
However, at each individual level along the way,
game balance is not necessarily preserved. A 1st-
level character with a major bloodline is more
powerful than a 1st-level character with a lesser
bloodline, or one with no bloodline at all. By 3rd
level, a character with a major bloodline must take a
bloodline level (a +1 LA), foregoing such things as
hit points, save bonuses and skill points, and is
likely underpowered at that point. He becomes
overpowered again over the next few levels, until he
must take another bloodline level and become
underpowered again, and so on.
Another issues with the bloodline rules is that the
decision of how strong you ultimately want your
bloodline to be must be made during character
creation. If you don't follow through with the
required bloodline levels (Level Adjustments), you
suffer an XP penalty of 20%. Your bloodline choice
A character's bloodline is a secondary aspect of his
nature; it is subtle and understated, at least at lower
levels. As such, a character's first class level cannot
be in a bloodline class, and a character's bloodline
levels can never exceed his other total class levels.

BLOODLINE LEVELS
Unlike the Background feat, a Bloodline feat can be
taken after 1st level, if allowed by the referee. This
could reflect the character discovering a long-
forgotten family bloodline and exploring it, letting it
develop and emerge from within him.
BLOODLINE DESCRIPTIONS
The remainder of this book describes the bloodlines
that may be selected with the Bloodline feat,
including two completely new bloodlines, the
ettercap and medusa. For each bloodline, there are
some comments about how the bloodline may have
come to be, as well as the benefits received from the
Bloodline feat.
BLOODLINE (FEAT)
You select of the following bloodlines: celestial,
demon, devil, doppelganger, black dragon, blue
dragon, brass dragon, bronze dragon, copper
dragon, gold dragon, green dragon, red dragon,
silver dragon, white dragon, air elemental, earth
elemental, fire elemental, water elemental, ettercap,
fey, genie (djinni), genie (efreeti), genie (janni),
ghost, ghoul, cloud giant, fire giant, frost giant, hill
giant, stone giant, storm giant, hag, lich,
lycanthrope, medusa, minotaur, mummy, ogre, ogre
mage, titan, troll, or vampire.
The basic benefits of a Bloodline feat are always a +2
bonus on all checks involving a particular skill, and
affinity with creatures of the bloodline type. Affinity
means you gain a +2 bonus on all Bluff, Diplomacy,
Gather Information, Intimidate and Perform checks
made to interact with creatures of you bloodline.
After the basic benefits, information on advancing
levels in a bloodline class in given. Bloodline classes
have three, four or five levels. Those bloodlines that
have only a minor bloodline in the standard rules
have three levels, those that have an intermediate
bloodline have four levels, and those that have a
major bloodline have five levels.
Benefit : You gain the traits associated with the
bloodline selected. These traits are detailed in the
bloodline descriptions.
