MONSTROUS BLOODLINES
bloodline potential. Bloodline levels are not
considered when determining XP penalties for
multiclassing.
Every so often, an individual is born who stands out
a little from the rest of his people. This individual
displays characteristics associated with a different
kind of creature, such as a dragon, giant, celestial, or
demon. Such a character is said to have a bloodline.
A character's bloodline is a secondary aspect of his
nature; it is subtle and understated, at least at lower
levels. As such, a character's first class level cannot
be in a bloodline class, and a character's bloodline
levels can never exceed his other total class levels.
Bloodlines can exist for any of a number of reasons.
Perhaps the character has an unusual ancestor, such
as a dragon who took alternate form to live among
humans or elves. The character might be a
throwback to an earlier age, when all species were
more closely related. The bloodline might be the
result of unusual supernatural energies present
during conception, pregnancy, or birth. It could also
be an omen sent by the gods, part of an ancient
prophecy or dire legend.
A Bloodline feat can be taken after 1st level, if
allowed by the referee. This could reflect the
character discovering a long-forgotten family
bloodline and exploring it, letting it develop and
emerge from within him.
NEW MONSTROUS BLOODLINES
This book presents 13 new monstrous bloodlines for
use in your game. If you also have Bloodline Levels ,
you may notice that each new bloodline presented
here receives a small bonus of some type in addition
to the usual +2 to a skill and affinity with the type of
creature.
BLOODLINE LEVELS MECHANICS
Monstrous Bloodlines uses the mechanics first
presented in Bloodline Levels . These mechanics differ
from the standard bloodline rules - for discussion of
this please refer to Bloodline Levels . Please note that
Bloodline Levels is not required to use Monstrous
Bloodlines .
This may make the new bloodlines seem slightly
more powerful than the others, however bear in
mind that the creatures that the new bloodlines are
based on are rarer, and often more savage. As such
the affinity ability is generally somewhat less
valuable for these new bloodlines.
To establish a character's bloodline, you select a
Bloodline feat. This reflects the character's bloodline
and provides in-game effects, such as a bonus to a
particular skill and affinity with creatures of the
bloodline type. You don't have to select a Bloodline
feat if you don't want to. Most characters do not
have an atypical bloodline, and therefore have no
use for the Bloodline feat.
BLOODLINE (FEAT)
You select one of the following bloodlines: aboleth,
aranea, behir, chuul, cloaker, couatl, harpy, kraken,
lamia, naga, rakshasa, sphinx, or treant.
If so desired, when a character with a Bloodline feat
advances a level, he may advance a level in his
bloodline class rather than a base class, prestige
class, racial paragon class or background class. This
advancement grants further benefits associated with
the bloodline, along with the things normally
associated with advancing a level such as skill
points, hit points, save bonuses and base attack
bonus progression. Advancing in a bloodline class
reflects a character focusing on and developing his
Benefit : You gain the traits associated with the
bloodline selected. These traits are detailed in the
bloodline descriptions.

ABOLETH
BLOODLINE BENEFITS
Those lucky enough to escape an aboleth's
enslavement ability are sometimes not entirely free
from suffering ill effects. An individual who was
enslaved for a long period of time, with the aboleth
forcing itself into its victim's mind telepathically,
can have his very mind and essence subtly warped
by the experience. Thus an aboleth bloodline is begat.
The basic benefits of a Bloodline feat are always a +2
bonus on all checks involving a particular skill, and
affinity with creatures of the bloodline type. Affinity
means you gain a +2 bonus on all Bluff, Diplomacy,
Gather Information, Intimidate and Perform checks
made to interact with creatures of you bloodline.
After the basic benefits, information on advancing
levels in a bloodline class is given in the bloodline
descriptions. Bloodline classes have three, four or
five levels, depending on the potential strength of
the bloodline.
Appearance : As an aboleth bloodline advances he
becomes paler and paler, until his skin has a slightly
translucent quality. He often secretes small amounts
of slime from his pores, giving the impression of a a
sickly individual who perspires greatly. However,
an aboleth bloodline is usually quite strong, with
wiry muscles beneath his pallid skin.
BLOODLINES AND ALIGNMENT
How is a character’s choice of bloodline affected by
the alignment of the base creature, if at all?
Ultimately, it’s up to each referee to answer this
question for his or her campaign, but there are
basically three approaches one could take.
Personality : An aboleth bloodline prefers to
dominate whatever situation he is in. He does not let
others make decisions or control the playing field;
he asserts his authority at all times, regardless of
who he may be dealing with. Though he does not
shy from battle, he generally prefers to intimidate
and bully his opponents into submitting to his
wishes.
ABOLETH BLOODLINE BENEFITS
A character cannot select a bloodline unless he is
the same alignment as the base creature. This
would be very restrictive, especially since a
bloodline represents a distant, subtle relationship
with that type of creature.
A character can select any bloodline, regardless of
alignment. This unrestricted option should work
for many campaigns.
+2 bonus on all Swim checks
+1 bonus on all Spot checks
A character can select any bloodline, but in order
to advance to higher levels in the bloodline class
must be similar to that of the base creature. For
example, any character can take any bloodline
feat, and even advance to 1st level in any
bloodline. However, in order to advance to 2nd
level in the bloodline class, the character must
share at least one aspect of the base creature’s
alignment, and to advance to 3rd level or higher,
a character must have the same alignment as the
base creature. Thus, a character with 1st level in
the couatl bloodline class (a lawful good creature)
could not advance to 2nd level in the class unless
he were either lawful or good (or both), and could
not advance to 3rd level unless he were lawful
good.
Aboleth Affinity: An aboleth bloodline gains a +2
bonus on all Bluff, Diplomacy, Gather
Information, Intimidate and Perform checks
made to interact with aboleths.
ABOLETH BLOODLINE ADVANCEMENT
Following are the features of the bloodline levels of
the aboleth bloodline, should you decide to advance
one or more levels in this regard.
