introduction
This PDF was fun to write. Christopher and I knocked ideas back and forth for about a
week and then, over a weekend, put together the pieces. As he sketched and painted I changed
the text and as I came up with new ideas he changed his sketches and paintings. Our goal, I
feel, has been achieved. This is not your typical PDF but, instead, is one designed with a
specific purpose. There’s a good chance that most players have no need for this PDF but
we’re hoping that they’ll find that by mixing the possessors with the beast the possessors
were designed to replace, their campaigns take on a weird, enjoyable tone.
How to Use this Material
As you’ve no doubt already noticed, Possessors is very short. This is not a detailed
adventure or campaign structure but, rather, a new monster that is ready for your imag-
ination and creativity. The possessors can be used in a single adventure, just as you
would any other creature like a goblin or vilstrak. Or, for those of you who prefer more
elaborate games, the possessors could form the basis of a complete campaign in which
the adventurers must stop this aberrations from laying waste to an entire town or city.
Imagine cries from your players when they learn that a recent meteor shower dropped
hundreds of these monsters on the town that they usually buy supplies in.
The other reason for the creation of this PDF was to replace one of my favorite mon-
sters that I cannot name here (but many of you have already figured it out). I didn’t want
to just make another monster but, rather, create something that anyone can use. With that
in mind, D20 System publishers are allowed to use possessors in their own products.

what are they?
Anatomy and Appearance
While the possessors you have heard of in the
tales of bards walk about as men and have arms as
men, that is not their true form. The possessor is
not at all humanoid in appearance (or intelligence)
but is, instead, something far more horri-
fying. The possessor is, in fact, only
the head and tentacles of the crea-
tures described in the tales and leg-
ends.
The true form of the possessor is
roughly similar in appearance to
such sea-dwelling creatures as the

its body turned left to right, its four white eyes
staring without seeing.
“It has seen us,” Rakarda whispered to me as
we crouched behind the fallen ogre. “It’s seen
us with something other than eyes.”
It was then that the creature’s erratic move-
ment ceased and it began steadily moving
directly toward our hidden position.

squid and octopus. Measuring
about six feet in length (includ-
ing the longest of its tentacles),
possessors are classified as
medium-size creatures. The
actual body of the possessor, not
counting tentacle length, ranges
in size from two and a half feet to
three feet.
Possessors have eight tentacles,
four of which are between three
and four feet in length and four that
are between one and two feet in
length. The tentacles are spaced
evenly around the body of the aber-
ration, alternating between the
longer and shorter tentacles. The
longer tentacles are quite strong and
are used to grasp objects and for
movement on land. The weaker tenta-
cles are quite dextrous and are used to
manipulate and hold small objects.
While possessors can use their larger
tentacles to move on land they prefer to
use their natural ability to fly.
Possessors are not strong or fast flyers,
with their aerial movement looking
more like levitation than flight.
