Dual Boot Windows 7
Adding Windows 7 on the same HDD as your OS X and Cham install.
Back in August 2009 I put together a dual boot guide for OS X 10.5.7 and Windows 7 on the same HDD
using a method posted by Arial on the voodooprojects’ forum. This worked and allowed Chameleon to
boot either OS X or Windows 7 but the problem had always been that we changed the active partition
away from Windows which caused it to not sleep. For reference my original dual boot guide was at

However, there has since been a development in Chameleon’s stage 0 boot loader ‘boot0’ which now
allows us to leave Windows7 the active partition and therefore adding a dual boot to your install is easy.
Pre Installation checks
As always, make sure you have a backup of your files incase anything goes wrong.
Before doing anything make sure you have the BootCD from this guide or a Bootable USB stick (I show
how to create one at

and test you can boot in to your Snow Leopard install from which ever one you choose.
These instructions assume you have followed this install guide exactly and partitioned your HDD as
described in ‘Part 1’ and have a spare FAT formatted partition (the FAT partition was originally an
option in my instructions so I will amend that to emphasise it’s usefulness). If you haven’t got a FAT
formatted partition then you will need to go in to Disk Utility and sort yourself one out.
Note: petrs99 has pointed out that Windows 7 won’t install on a partition number higher than 4.
You will also need the latest version of Chameleon which will have the new boot0hfs file and the new
fdisk440. You can find a pre-release version of RC5 in my Support Files which you can get from my thread.
If you have more than one HDD then you must disconnect them all apart from the intended target
HDD in SATA port 0. If you don't disconnect other drives then the Windows7 installer has been known
to write the boot files it needs to a different volume.
The installation
Insert your Windows7 DVD, reboot and boot from it. Then from the Windows7 installer select Custom
(advanced) for a new install, then format the target FAT partition to NTFS before it allows the install.
It should be obvious which partition is the one you want and you can use the size of the partition as an
identifer but make sure you have identified the correct partition or you will destroy your current OS X
installation. After completion, when you reboot Windows7 will have written it's code to the MBR of
the disk and will become the default OS and always boot.

Bring Snow Leopard back
To get OS X back, you need to boot by using either the BootCD or the bootable USB stick (which you
tested with earlier) in to Chameleon and selecting your already existing OS X installation.
Once booted in to your OS X installation, you will then need to re-install Chameleon by following the
steps shown on page 2 of ‘Part 3 - Install Chameleon’ PDF, but with one difference.
When you get to the section:
Drag file
fdisk440
from the Support Files to the Terminal & without pressing return type
-f boot0 -u -y /dev/rdisk
X
Use this instead:
-f boot0hfs -u -y /dev/rdisk
X
That’s the only difference to the install steps and it writes boot0hfs to the first 440bytes of the MBR
which will look for boot1h on a non-active partition. This allows you to leave Windows7 on the active
partition which it require to enter sleep.
When you reboot you should boot straight in to Chameleon and have the option of booting either OS
X or Windows 7.
