We’re working toward a “greener”
Kershaw every day.
Our Tualatin, Oregon manufacturing
facilities employ strategies that
reduce our use of non-recyclable
materials and help us efciently
reuse all the materials we can.
Our new ofces were built with
sustainable materials and practices
in mind. And our packaging uses
both recyclable and recycled
materials.
Our facilities use uorescent light
bulbs and we recycle both bulbs
and batteries. And, of course, our
lunchrooms provide recycling
bins for bottles and cans.
And, of course, we recycle ofce
paper, cardboard, and plastics.
Greener Packaging
We know over-packaging is a key
environmental concern. Kershaw
works to be as sustainable as
possible—while still protecting
our products to ensure they reach
our customers in perfect condition.
For example, Kershaw recently
switched to all-recycled shipping
boxes. Our packing material is
recyclable, as are our cardboard
knife boxes and plastic “clamshell”
packing.
Greener Ofces
When we built the new ofces on
our Tualatin campus, our architects
and construction team were asked to
make sustainable choices. The ofces
were designed to be especially energy
efcient. For example, the windows
are tinted to help retain heat in the
winter and cooling in summer.
Sensors were installed so that
lights automatically turn off in
ofces that are empty for a certain
period of time. The carpet tile that
was installed has a very low VOC
(Volatile Organic Content) and
PVC-free backing. (There are
environmental concerns about
PVC’s toxicity.) All adhesives that
were used in the construction are
low VOC, as is the interior ofce
paint and primer.
Greener Manufacturing
Naturally, knife manufacturing
requires the cutting and grinding
of large quantities of steel. The
machines that do this are lubricated
with oil, while special coolant is used
to keep both the machines and the
steel cooler. Kershaw collects and
reuses both the oil and the coolant
to cut down on the use of petroleum
products. All scrap metal is sent to
a recycler. Even the metal-laden
sludge from the grinding machines
is separated from the coolant
and recycled.
As we move into the future,
Kershaw will continue to strive
to be an ecologically responsible
company—from our manufacturing
processes to our ofce practices
and procedures.
Going
he grooves in these new
knives are 3-D machined in an
unusual striated pattern that
just plain looks cool. Of
course, looks aren’t everything.
So these groovy knives, designed
by custom knifemaker RJ Martin,
are also designed to deliver top
performance. For hardness,
corrosion resistance, and wear
resistance, both the new Zings
and the Grooves feature high-carbon
Sandvik 14C28N stainless-steel
blades.
Both Zings and Grooves feature
the Flipper ambidextrous manual
opening system for smooth and easy
opening. But if you don’t want to
ip, the Zings can be opened with
the handy built-in thumb studs. All
models also include a removable
pocket clip that can be reversed for
tip-up or tip-down carry.

How to ip a Flipper
F
rom the efcient design of its
blade to the powerful, contoured
handle, everything about the Ener-g
and Ener-g II is meant to conserve
your energy by putting the knife’s
built-in energy to work.
Here’s what’s different: when the
blade is open, the Flipper protrusion
folds into a recess in the liner, giving
the OD a slim, smooth line all the
way down. To complete the stream-
lined look, the OD-1 has a two-toned
handle: textured G-10 on one side
and 410 stainless steel on the other,
plus a secure frame lock. The OD-2
features high performance glass-lled
nylon scales on both sides and a
locking liner for safety.
Hold the Flipper knife in your dominant
hand, blade side up. Be sure to keep your
ngers away from the“shaving sharp”
blade. Place your index nger on the
ridged part of the blade protrusion. Pull
back smoothly on the blade protrusion
at the same time as you ick your wrist
forward slightly. The combination of
the pull-back and the slight ip will open
the knife and lock the blade into position.
Option two, apply heavy index-nger
pressure with a quick pull-back toward
the butt on the handle. Both methods will
open a Flipper knife quickly and easily.
