A Spanish ambulance company in the city of Zaragoza, Ambuibérica, is trying out bifuel vehicles to transport
patients. the 10 Mercedes-sourced vehicles use bifuel powertrains that can burn both natural gas and gasoline.
turns out, the drivers aren’t too happy with these models: they criticize the van’s short, 250-km range (about 140
miles), lack of natural gas availability in town and lower speed compared to the diesel counterparts. While the
city of Zaragoza itself has some natural gas fueling stations, the rest of the Aragon region doesn’t have any, so the
company isn’t exactly eager to expand the bifuel experience to rural parts of Aragon. the picture above shows

Volkswagen has introduced
a new version of the touran tSI EcoFuel
that provides an extended range thanks to an increased fuel
tank capacity and improved eficiency.
Equipped with a quasi-monovalent drivetrain, the touran tSI EcoFuel
will provide a range of 520 kilometers (323 miles) thanks to the increased
fuel tank. A petrol reserve tank with a capacity of 11 liters will bring an
extra of 150 km (93 miles). Both natural gas tanks are mounted into the
underbody to avoid reducing trunk volume.
the engine is mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox, thus achieving
a fuel consumption of 4.6 kg/100km while releasing 126 grams of Co 2
per kilometer. “Calculated against current prices for natural gas, the
Touran TSI EcoFuel can travel 100 kilometres for around €4.50”.
the gas tanks are boasting a capacity of 24 kilos, up from 18 kg on
the previous version, on the 5-seat version. A seven-seater
is available as well at the same price,
but come with a total range of
520 km (370 km for natural gas
and 150 km for petrol). Volk-
swagen touran tSI EcoFuel’s
powertrain releases 150 PS and
220 Nm of torque available be-
tween 1,500 and 4,500 rpm.
the car is already available for
ordering at Volkswagen’s autho-
rized dealers with a base price of
27,450 euro.

Mercedes Benz announced the introduction of the BlueEFFICIENCY
for the Sprinter line, meaning not only the addition of a badge behind
the B-pillars, but also improved fuel eficiency and reduced emissions.
Mercedes will it the Sprinter NGt with BlueEFFICIENCY systems.
the basic engine for this version of the Sprinter (whether it is in 316 NGt
or 516 NGt body styles) is a four cylinder petrol engine, developing 156
hp and 240 Nm of torque.
“The new Sprinter NGT with mono-fuel or bi-fuel natural gas drive
conirms this assessment: sharply reduced exhaust gas and noise emis-
sions, appreciably lower upkeep costs, and a large cruising range
in combination with the standard drive are some of its advantages,”
the manufacturer said.

Clean Air Power (CAP), the developer of Dual-Fuel combustion tech-
nology that enables heavy-duty diesel engines to operate on a com-
bination of diesel and natural gas, has entered into a Letter of Intent
with a yet to be named major global truck manufacturer. the letter
outlines a development agreement to deliver a joint demonstration
vehicle designed to establish the technical and commercial viability of
a jointly produced dual-fuel vehicle with the possibility of formal con-
tract and commercial production should the development project
prove successful.

Barcelona’s transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (tMB) recently replaced another 45 diesel buses with CNG buses its number to 296, or 27% of its
total leet of 1080 buses. In doing so, tMB has reached its renewal target for year end. the new buses will reduce nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide
emissions by 90% and, besides not generating any ash or solid waste, will also have low noise levels. the chairperson of tMB, Assumpta Escarp, pointed
out that the model presented by tMB “respects the environment and the city” and uses new technologies to improve public service.
the new vehicles have been manufactured by the German company MAN. Five are articulated (310 hp) and 40 are standard (245 hp), all low platform
and with facilities for disabled persons.
tMB says the adoption of gas engines and cleaner diesel (Euro 4 and Euro 5) represents a direct contribution to improving air quality in the immediate
environment and protecting the health of the population of the metropolitan area, as well as contributing to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Standard taxi from the Vehicle Production Group is called the
MV-1 and production is slated to begin next year at the AM Gener-
al plant in Mishawaka, Indiana. that’s the same assembly location
where the Hummer H2 is built, which makes sense since the MV-1
is based on the same GM underpinnings as the behemoth SUV.
According to its makers, the MV-1 is the irst purpose-built
wheelchair-accessible vehicle in America, and it’s able to ac-
commodate up to 6 adults or 2 full-size wheelchairs. An ADA-
approved ramp that stows under the vehicle’s loor and a 36-
inch wide side opening are designed to make entry and exit
a simple affair.
With its body-on-frame construction made with fully boxed rails, the MV-1 should
prove to be a durable people mover and its well-known GM drivetrain components should be easily
serviceable. Further, VPG has teamed up with Clean Energy to develop a dedicated compressed
natural gas powertrain option that will provide a 250-mile range with signiicantly reduced emissions.
Styling wise, the MV-1 may not be the prettiest machine on the road, but for those needing to
transport wheelchair-bound passengers, this design may just be a thing of beauty.

Garbage collection in South Australia has
just got cleaner following the introduction of
CNG trucks to local leets. SItA Environmental
Solutions’ (SItA) brand-new leet of kerbside
collection vehicles was oficially commissioned.
the vehicle of choice is the 6×4 IVECo ACCo,
Model 2350G, which can run on either CNG or
LNG. SItA’s 23 strong collection leet will service
the Northern Adelaide Waste Management
Authority (NAWMA) council regions of Playford,
Salisbury and Gawler with fortnightly recycling
and garden and food organics collections and
a weekly general waste collection.

Ptt, the Petroleum Authority of thailand, has
reported that there are now about 155,000 cars
running on engines powered by CNG in thailand
and natural gas sales have risen to 3,900 tonnes
a day. Based on igures provided by Mr Pun-
nachai Futrakul, Ptt’s manager supervising the
NGV market, NGV engines were being installed
in about 100 vehicles each day, mostly in trucks
and new cars.

Rep. Roy Blunt has secured $700,000 for a CNG
fueling station that will be shared by the City of
Springield, Greene County, and the Missouri
Department of transportation.
the grant requires no local matching funds
and will help kick-start the estimated $2.2 million
project.
Springield Public Works Director Marc thorns-
berry said the money is a irst installment that will
pay for a master plan design, a “slow-ill” natu-
ral gas pumping system and retroitting of some
smaller vehicles, such as pickups, SUVs, and cars
to burn natural gas.
the natural gas fueling station will be at the
Springield Public Works operations Center.
A slow-ill station - where vehicles are illed over-
night - would come irst. A more costly fast-ill sta-
tion, where vehicles can be fueled in 15 minutes
or less, would come later.
Mr Footrakul has conirmed with NGV Global
that heavy duty CNG vehicles currently number
23,610 units in thailand, with interest increasing
at around 20% of current conversions. Currently,
the proportions of heavy duty CNG vehicles are
composed of :
Mono-fuel conversions (old engine) = 71%
Mono-fuel repoweredg (new engine) = 8%
oEM vehicles = 6%
Diesel Dual-fuel (DDF) = 15%
the trucks will refuel at NAWMA’s new $2 mil-
lion Elizabeth West CNG refuelling station which
was also oficially commissioned on Saturday by
the South Australian State Minister for Science,
Michael o’Brien and the Chairman of NAWMA,
Councillor Brian Goodall.
the ACCo is powered by a Cummins 8.3 C
Plus Natural Gas Engine, which is Euro 4 compli-
ant. In addition to the CNG tanks, the trucks are
itted with on-board computers to capture data
each time household bins are emptied.
NAWMA, which serves a population of around
230,000, manages over 150,000 collections of
household waste, recyclables, garden and food
organics from the kerbside each week.
the increasing number of NGVs, including the
proposed 4,000 CNG buses soon to be leased,
has prompted Ptt to ask the Bangkok Mass tran-
sit Authority (BMtA) to expedite the creation of
14 new NGV illing stations.

Alternative Fuel Systems (2004) Inc. (AFS),
based in Calgary, has been selected by tata
Motors for a project involving the CNG fueled
version of the recently announced “Xenon Xt”
extended cab pickup truck. tata Motors is one
of India’s largest manufacturers of motor vehi-
cles. In a company press release, AFS President
and CEo Jim Perry stated that “A Xenon XT pro-
vided by Tata Motors (Thailand) Ltd. equipped
with an AFS engine control system has now ar-
rived in Calgary. We are in the process of licens-
ing the vehicle for testing on Canadian roads.”
“The objective of our project is to reine the
Xenon engine control system to provide optimal
drivability and performance under a wide spec-
trum of operating conditions. It is very important
to vehicle buyers that the pickup has a smooth
and powerful feel in real world driving. The only
way to properly assure this elevated level of per-
formance is through testing on a production ve-
hicle.”
AFS is also road-testing and reining perfor-
mance of other tata Motors vehicles. AFS sup-
plies electronic engine management controllers,
natural gas handling components and associ-
ated software to manufacturers of new vehicles
and stationary engines, as well as to aftermarket
leet conversion specialists.
