Congratulations to Mickey Adams on his
British Championship victory, covered
inside. Adams and Nigel Short were, as
one might expect, a touch above the rest
and they finished ahead of the pack. In a
rapidplay play-off, one would back Mickey
against almost anyone in the world and so
it proved. Both Mickey and Nigel have
been gaining rating points lately. Mickey
went from Sheffield to LA and won an
international invitational.

Guardian and Sunday Times, the latter
co-authored by Keene.
At the opening ceremony there was no
microphone or plinth for the speakers. I
heard CJ give his opening address and
then retired to the back of the hall. Ray
Keene, who had been invited to open the
tournament, then spoke. Consequently, I
didn’t hear him. It was only some days later
I realised this when Keene tweeted, slightly
hysterically, that I had omitted him from my
report in the Daily Telegraph , an omission I
was pleased to rectify. I noticed some posts
on the internet that confirmed I was not the
only person who had missed him. It was the
40th anniversary of Keene’s victory at the
British at Blackpool in 1971 but he was an
odd choice given his fractured relationship
with the governing body that ended very
badly with the Tony Miles affair. I think that,
after all this time, CJ has decided to let
bygones be bygones and the tournament
was covered well in the Times .

for news on Nigel Short’s simul tour. Nigel
is going to repeat his hugely successful
trip around the UK and Ireland last year.

tour have been confirmed:

I could see this was a non-story and kept
my pen in my pocket. This stance was
vindicated when subsequently, it emerged
the whole thing had really been a
misunderstanding. I just hope the story’s
Google ranking diminishes over time. CJ
was so upset he offered to resign but his
offer was rightly rejected. The ECF needs
CJ, he is doing a fine job and I hope he
remains in post for many years.

What a pleasure it was to see nearly all
the leading English players in the British
Championship. Credit goes to English
Chess Federation president CJ de Mooi
who not only backed the championships
with his own money, but also secured
sponsorship from Darwin Strategic and
transformed the event.
Lara Barnes took a lot of undeserved flak.
She wrote to me the following regarding
the Sunday Times article.
The storm in a T-shirt at the end of the
tournament, mentioned in the report
inside, was also unfortunate. It’s just as
well we have an understanding sponsor
from the chess world. I shudder to think
what British Gas might have made of it
had they been supporting the chess and
not the swimming.
CJ’s claim that he was ‘banned’ from
wearing the t-shirt is just untrue. There is
a dress code for the event, on page of
the programme “smart casual”.
However, I would add just one caveat. The
ECF does not yet look ready to stage a
professional event. For example, there was
no Press Officer. Indeed, there was little to
show that the event had commercial
sponsorship. I arrived the day before and
could detect no branding at all or indeed

to his authority.
The latest Live Rating list shows that the
Classic features the world’s top four as
Magnus Carlsen, Vishy Anand, Levon
Aronian and Vladimir Kramnik have all
gained points.

established that prior to the prize-giving
at the British Chess Championships at
Ponds Forge, Sheffield, discussions took
place between the event organisers and
CJ de Mooi, president of the English
Chess Federation (ECF), which led to his
non-participation in the presentation.

Botvinnik once famously told Genna
Sosonko in an interview for New in
Chess magazine that has since gone into
chess lore, but it turns out that wasn’t

since apologised to each other. I am
grateful they have shown a willingness to

At a recent celebration of the centenary
of Botvinnik’s birth, Mark Taimanov
revealed that he once played a secret
blitz match against his mentor. 85-year-
old Taimanov was among the ten legends
(plus 89-year-old Yuri Averbakh as
arbiter) who recently took part in the
veteran's memorial tournament in Suzdal,
near Moscow.

Adam Raoof, the Director of Home Chess
was not present at the closing ceremony
as he was running one of his events in
London. I know he wants to make some
personnel changes and one of them
should be Adam becoming tournament
director. Credit to him and CJ for finding
an excellent venue. Playing conditions
were very good.
On the day of Botvinnik’s 100th birthday
anniversary, Taimanov related during a
lecture the tale of his secret blitz match
with the Patriarch, who vehemently
despised the fast and furious form of the
game. It occurred in 1966 while both
were together at a Soviet training camp
preparing for the Chess Olympiad in
Havana of that year. Taimanov said he
was asked by Botvinnik to come to his
room one evening without telling anyone,
and although curious of such a request,
he naturally complied.

The London Chess Classic timetable has
just been released and once again we
have plenty of tournaments and activities
running alongside the main event from
December 3-12. As the tournament falls
on two weekends, I hope we will not only
have more spectators, but more entries
in the London Chess Classic Open as
entrants will only have to take one week
off work. We will also have two weekend
tournaments, two rapidplays and of
course blitz every night.
On arrival, Botvinnik let him in, then
locked the door and pulled down the
blinds on the windows before asking:
“Would you agree to play ten blitz games
against me?” Taimanov said he
comfortably won the match 7-3. But
before he left the room, Botvinnik warned:
“Please Mark, don’t tell anyone about
this.” And for 45 years, he kept his word
by remaining silent about their blitz match.

Viktor Korchnoi has agreed to come back
and will be guest of honour. The great
man will again give a couple of
simultaneous displays and the dates will
be confirmed shortly.
There will be training courses for arbiters
and for those who wish to learn more
about teaching chess. Existing chess
coaches can attend a different course to
brush up their classroom skills.
Viktor Korchnoi was the winner of the
veteran's tournament held to
commemorate the 100 th Anniversary of the
birth of the sixth world chess champion
Mikhail Botvinnik. Korchnoi, who had a
record of a win, a loss and two draws in
his personal encounters with Botvinnik as
a younger man, was undefeated with five
wins and four draws in the ten-player
veterans event, including this nice win
over Russian GM Igor Zaitsev.
Tickets are now on sale and proceeds go
to the charity Chess in Schools and
Communities. The timetable and entry
