knownasBaso.IamnotusingthenameBaso,becauseoursecondseriesisgoingtobeonthe
JapaneseBasho–thegreatmysticpoetofZen.AndthenameMaTzuisitselfmoremeaningful
thanhispopularname,Baso.
BeforeIdiscussthesutras,abiographicalnoteonMaTzuisabsolutelyneeded,becauseheisnot
knowntotheworld.Heisoneofthoseunfortunategeniuseswhomtheworldtriesineveryway
toignore,toforgetthattheyevenexist.Eventheideathattheyexisthurtstheegoofthecrowd.
Ithasbeendoingharmtoeverygenius,becausetheveryexistenceofageniusreducesyoutoa
retardedbeing.Everyenlightenedmasterisevidencethatyouarelivingindarkness,thatyouhave
totransformyourdarknessintolife,intolight.
Itseemstobesuchagreattask–itisnot,butitappearstobeagreattask–totransformyour
blindnessintoclearperceptiveeyes;totransformyourdarknessintobeautifulmorninglight.Itis
asimplething,thesimplestintheworld,butjustbecauseitissimple,itdoesnotappealtothe
mind.Mindisinterestedindoinggreatthings.Thedesirebehindeveryambitionofthemindistobe
special.Andyoucanbespecialonlywithspecialachievements.
TheproblemwithZenisthatitwantsyoutobeutterlysimple,notspecial.Itgoesagainstthevery
desireofthemind,whichisnotasmallphenomenon–itisafour-million-years-olddesire,which
everybodyiscarryingindifferentlives.Mindcannotunderstandwhyyoushouldbesimplewhenyou
couldbespecial,whyyoushouldbehumblewhenyoucouldbepowerful.Andmindisheavy,ithas
thegreatweightofthepast.Themomentthemindseesanyonehumble,simple,natural,abuddha,
itimmediatelycondemnshim,becausesuchamangoesagainstthewholemakeupofthehuman
mind.
Andinawaythemindisright.Tobeabuddhayouwillhavetodropthemindcompletely,youwill
havetobecomeanemptymirror.

ASACHILD,MATZUJOINEDALOCALMONASTERY;BEFOREHEWASTWENTY,HEWAS
ALREADYAPROFESSEDMONK.
Hewasaborngenius,andevenhadpropheciesabouthimbyothermasters–thatheisnotto
betakenasjustXYZ,hehasapossibilityofbecomingagreatmaster–andtheprophecieswere
fulfilled.
Sometimesitispossible,ifamasterlooksatachildwhenthechildisstilluncorruptedbythesociety,
thathecanseehispotentialclearly.Andthat’swhatanothergreatmaster,Eno,saidtoNangaku.
Enowasthesixthpatriarch,thesixthgreatmasterafterBodhidharma.HetoldNangaku,”Thischild
isgoingtobecomeagreatmaster;becareful.”AndfinallyMaTzubecamenotonlyagreatmaster,
butthesecondmostimportantmasterafterEno.Eno’sprophecywasfulfilledmorethanhehad
expected.MaTzuprovedhimselftobeagreatermasterthantheprophecyhadsaid.
Butitishisstrangefatethatheisnotknowntotheworld.Perhapshewastoomuchaheadofhis
time;perhapshewastoofarawayfromtheordinarycrowd;perhapshiswayofteachingwasso
subtlethattheordinarymindwasincapableofcomprehendingit.
Butwhateverthecause,weareresurrectingMaTzu.Wewanthimtobeacceptedinthehistoryof
consciousness,intheplacethatbelongstohim.
ThestoryManeeshahasbrought:

THEDHARMA.
Amasterisnothingbutclarity,transparency.Tohim,thingswhichareinvisibletoyouarevisible.
Yourpotentialityissomethingveryinvisible,themysteryofyourbeing.Buttothemasteritisalmost
anopenbook;hecanreadit.Andtohavesuchamaster,whocanreadyourpotentialityandcan
helpyougrowaccordingtoyourpotentiality–notaccordingtohisideology–isthegreatestblessing
onecanhave.
WHENNANGAKUFIRSTSAWMATZU,HERECOGNIZEDHIMBYINTUITIONASAVESSELOF
THEDHARMA.
Thesearemetaphors.”Avesselofthedharma”istosaythathewillbecomeapresencewhich
willsendaradiationallaround.Peoplewillcomefromthousandsofmilesaway,pulledbyan
invisibleforce,likegravitation,notknowingwhytheyarebeingpulledtoacertainperson.Theywill
understandonlywhentheyhavereachedtothatperson–felthisenergy,quenchedtheirthirst.Then
theywillknowthatsomesubtleforcewaspullingthemtofulfilltheirdestiny.
Justafewdaysago,Icametoknowthattreeshaveacertainsensibilityaboutwater.Thescientist
whowasexploringitwasamazedtoseethattherewasatreewithnowateraround,exceptthattwo
hundredfeetawaytherewasawaterpipe.Butthetreesentitsrootstothewaterpipe,forceditto
break,andwasrelishingandnourishingitselffromthatwater.

Thescientistwasworriedbecausehecouldnotfindanywateraroundthetree,andhehadnot
thoughtthatitwascarryingthewaterfromawaterpipethatithadbrokenwithitsroots.Hewas
puzzled–howdidthetreeknowaboutthewaterpipetwohundredfeetaway?Andithadnotsent
itsrootsanywhereelse,justdirectlytothewaterpipe.
Thetreecannotlivewithoutwater.Certainlyitmusthaveacertainsensibility,acertainhidden
knowledgewherewateris,eventhoughthewaterisinsideapipe,andtwohundredfeetaway.
Thesameisthesituationwithyou,ifyourquestfortruthishonest,notjustacuriosity.From
thousandsofmilesaway,youwillstartgettingpulledtoaplacewhereyourthirstcanbequenched.
Existencemakesathirstonlyafterithascreatedwatertoquenchit.Iftherearedisciples,seekers,
searchers,existencemanagesthattheyshouldfindamasterwhocanseeinthemwhattheir
possiblefutureis,andcanhelpthemtobethemselves.
Themasterhasnoideology,themasterisnotamissionary,themasterdoesnotprogramyou.On
thecontraryhede-programsyou;hetakesawayallyourideologies,yourprejudices,yourverymind,
sothatthepureemptinessofyourbeingstartsgrowing.
Themastershavebeenlost,thewholeworldofthatgoldenquestfortruthhasbecomeamemory.
Andattimesonethinks,”Perhapsallthesebuddhasarejustourimagination”–becausetheyhave
disappearedfromourmundaneworld.
Yourpurposeinbeinghereistobringthatgoldenquestbackintotheworld.AndIamtryingfromall
differentangles–allthesemastersaredifferentangles,differentapproachestothetruth–hoping
thatsomethingmayclickinyouandopenthedoorthathasbeenclosedforyears,forcenturies.
HEVISITEDMATZUINHISCELLWHEREHEWASMEDITATING,ANDASKEDHIM:”IN
PRACTICINGSITTINGMEDITATION,WHATDOESYOURREVERENCEASPIRETOATTAIN?”
Justtakenoteofit:Nangakuwasawell-establishedmasterandMaTzuwasjustayoungdisciple,
butheaddresseshimas”yourreverence.”Forthemaster,yourpresentisnotonlythepresent,it
isalsoyourfuture.Heknowsyou,thatonedayyouwillbecomeabuddha.Itdoesnotmatterthat
ittakesafewdays,orafewyears,orafewlives.BecauseNangakucanseehisbuddhahood,he
addressesevenadiscipleas”yourreverence.”
ItremindsmeaboutGautamBuddha’spastlife,whenhewasnotyetabuddha,andheheard
aboutagreatmasterwhohadbecomeenlightened.Hewenttosee,justoutofcuriosity,whatthis
phenomenonofenlightenmentis,andhowitmakesadifferenceinaman.
Hetouchedthefeetoftheman,althoughhehadnointentionofdoingso;butjustashecameinto
hisenergyfield,spontaneouslyhetouchedhisfeet.Hewonderedwhyhewastouchinghisfeet,
becausehehadnotcometheretobeadisciple.Buttheveryarea,theveryatmosphere,thevery
milieu–andsomethinginhisheartstartedringingabell,thatperhapshehadcomeclosetohis
home,withoutanyconsciousintention.
Justspontaneouslyhetouchedthefeetoftheman. Itwasamiracletohim,becausehehad
nevertouchedanybody’sfeet.Hewasnotamanoffaithorbelief;hewasayoungman,andvery
