Track 1

Interviewer, Alice

I:              Alice Harker? Come in. Have a seat.

A:              Thank you.

I:              Thanks for coming in today. Can I get you a coffee?

A:              No thanks. I’ve had two cups this morning.

I:              OK. Did you have a good journey here?

A:              Yes, thanks. I travelled up by train yesterday and I stayed in a hotel last night. I’m catching a train back at half past eleven.

I:              Oh, right, we’d better begin then. You’ve applied for a place on the ‘Sherpa Tensing’ expedition. Why do you want to go on this expedition?

A:              Well, I’ve visited nearly every continent in the world, and I’ve done a lot of climbing, but I’ve never done anything for charity before.

I:              I see. Have you ever been on an expedition like this before? I mean, this challenging?

A:              Oh yes. I’ve climbed extensively in the Alps and I’ve already taken part in six Himalayan expeditions, but I haven’t climbed to the summit of Everest yet.

I:              Well, you’ve had the right mountaineering experience, Ms Harker. So that’s not a problem at all. Now, tell me something about your last job.

A:              Mmm, well I worked as a consultant last year, for a management consultancy firm, running team-building courses.

I:              So why did you leave that job?

A:              That isn’t really what I want to do. I thought I’d try it, but really, I want to spend more time climbing. I’ve been on two expeditions so far this year.

I:              OK, that’s all very useful. Now, …
