'Prepare the horse for battle, but remember - victory comes from the Lord' - King
Solomon.
In my youth 1 could sit for long hours at the chess board in complete solitude and feel
perfectly happy. I also liked reading. I made the acquaintance of Svetonius and Plutarch
fairly erly, but they did not provoke in me an interest in Roman civilisation. This
occurred much later, when I had made the acquaintance of Seneca's way of thinking and
also the style of Sallustius Crispus. Since that time a feeling of joy arises in me on every
occasion when, together with Gibbon and Mommsen, I can engross myself in the world
of my heroes. The disposition that arises helps me to retain my optimism, without which
success in chess tounaments is improbable for any signiicant length of time.
My other passion became spot, thanks to an accidental set of circumstances. Ater
inishing school I did not qualiy for the University Law Faculty. The neighbouring
Sports College ofered me a place without my having to pass any exam� since my
successes in chess had gained me a favourable image in the sports world, and chess was
revered then as a type of sport. True, there was no chess specialisation in the college, and
girls gathered to watch my helpless attempts at gymnastics and swimming, in order to
laugh to their hearts' content. The point was that, before entering the sports college, I had
not paid the slightest attention to physical exercise. I consider it a special favour of the
immoal gods, that I went through the Spots rather than the Law Faculty, as practising
sport has prolonged my chess career.
Rome nd sport, more than other factors, have formulated my attitude to the
cometitive process. I share the conviction of the Romans, that victory in battle is granted
by the immotal gods and is therefore outside the will of the commander. It is the sme in
a chess batle. Without at all pretending to resolve the philosophical question regarding
the relationship between ree will and predetermination, I will risk proposing that the
result of a chess game depends considerably less on the eforts of a player, than is
customrily thought. Therefore the task of a .chess commander reduces to rying to ind
the est of the ossible moves, without worrying about the result.
Fatigue and failure, more than other factors, inluence the mood and competitiveness
of a player ater a game. A bottle of good wine may help to cope with fatigue, but, in
order not to become dispirited by the result, you should seek inspiration rom the
thoughts of Seneca:
'In this life, stomy like a sea, there is one reuge: disdain uture vicissitudes, stand
depenably and openly, staunchly meet the blows of fotune, do not hide and do not
linch' .
